Just finished the TA for the second time due to the first replacement making a growling gear noise. Now the second is no different than the first it makes the same noise noises in hi and lo but seems to function and go away at higher rpms. Anyone ever encounter this?

has anyone ever given you an explanation as to why this is happening? I have spared no expense and cut no corners with the job and this is how it treats me lol

I figure it's just 'gear whine'.Or the 'TA end play isnt quite right. You did use a dial indicator to set end play? If it shifts
right and doesnt slip, run it and dont worry. A lot of tractors have some kind of transmission noise.

yes a dial indicator was used I'm thinking it was 8 thousands of an inch on end play. New quill gear was installed as well. Quill was put on ta before it was put in the transmission so I know it seated in all four discs. It's loud like a dual power on a Ford

How much shimming did it take ?? and did you shim the contour shaft ?? Who's T/A did you buy ?? did you take all the slack out of the contour shaft and get all the gears set in ?? Did you tighten it up tight and not back off and resnug it them pin it ?? since i can not hear what is going on and i was not holding your hand and looking at everything we are all guessing . I have installed a lot of them over the years and only once did i ever have a problem and i was glad it was on my own tractor and not a customers . Been out many times on farmer installed ones to fix a problem . sometimes they ship the wrong gear with the t/A and this will give you this problem . If you shim on the wrong side this will give you problems .

I have a question and I think I know the answer. Was the nut on bottom shaft loose when you first time took it apart, allowing gears to seek their own wear patterns. I am thinking it was. Now, when you put it back together, tightened up that nut the gears are fixed and cannot move and do not run true. I always tighten, back off nut a little and by various means, make sure the nut cannot come off. Learned that about 40 years ago. Equal shimming to what was needed on TA is important also to help align those gears to wear pattern that has been established. I assume you already made darn sure the tooth degree angles were compatible as I believe that was discussed before.
