Looks like sassafras to me. If it has leaves with one,two and three lobes and smells better than anything else you may find in the forest it is sassafras. You pull the roots out of the ground, clean them and peel the bark off. Boil the bark and enjoy the fragrance. Makes sassafras tea.. Sam Womer(PA)

Definitely sassafras. If you think the leaves smell like root beer, dig up a root and smell it.

I used sassafras roots to help me quit smoking many years ago. Part of the problem of quitting smoking is that your mouth wants something to do. You can only eat so many mints or candy, and gum wears you out after a while. I cut small sassafras roots (about the diameter of a pencil) into one-inch lengths, leaving the bark on. I would place one in my cheek and leave it there for hours at a time, and it made it much easier to forget about cigarettes. In addition to a very pleasant taste, I think the stuff is mildly narcotic.

Sassafras thrives usually in poorer soils. It also has VERY colorful foliage in the fall, right up there with the best hard maples. I like to take the small green twigs out by the leaves and chew on them, never tried the roots. Sasparilla (sp) an old timey root beer was supposedly made from the roots.

I am sure it is sassafras as you say. I have lots of them on my place. Years ago people would make sassafras tea out of the roots. They say it is good for your health.
