What is going on with my Cylco 800 corn planter ?

This thing is making me even crazier than I am normally. Tell me why the seed isn't coming out of the tank into the drum fast enough . The seed drum will run almost empty , and the monitor squeals . If I take the drum off , seed will run out on to the ground just fine . The pressure gauge is also right up . I am at a lost . I have had this planter for 20 years , and never had this before . Any ideas ? Bruce

I can't help you Bruce but I know the feeling. My answer to having a key piece of equipment failure is to have a standby unit just in case. I also might suggest that you look into getting a newer planter but not a new one as 20 years of use suggests that you got your monies worth out of that old IH planter. Good luck and happy farming.

Did the shoot slide down? If memory serves you can adjust the shoot up and down to change the seed height in the drum.

Bruce, sounds like an air leak, check to see if the seal around the top of the seed hopper is leaking air, or the lid, if the seed will not come down while running it is because the air flow is trying to go up through where the seed needs to come down through!

Bruce, there is probably a major air leak in the hopper area. Check the hinge area for cracks in the fibreglass{from opening the lid and flexing them up}, the seam where the top of the hopper meets the bottom, and as mentioned the lid seal itself. Glue it on. The seam between the 2 halves probably needs to be siliconed on the inside again. Doesn't hurt to do the outside seam as well especially at the front under the hinge area. Also put in a stove bolt or self-tapping screw between every pop rivet in the seam. When there is a hopper leak, there is more air pressure in the seed drum than the hopper so the seed won't flow down to the hopper. The air flow meter may say your pressure is in the 7 to 8 ounces per square inch range but the pressure in the drum may be twice that. I resealed mine a few years ago and added a second pressure gauge coming from the drum to check both hopper and drum pressure. Hope this helps. I'll drop in again next time I'm in your neighbourhood.......Ron

btdt , with my 400 cyclo , and concur with all suggestions,, a tube of silicone well placed will solve a lot of problems , never thought about the rivet heads,.. thank you ,. . everyone needs a basic understanding how the ihc air planter worx ,, vaccum in the seed hopper is achieved when there are no air leaks ,,.the ihc planter is a very good planter , good seed placement and reliable .. however , when vacuum drops don't kid yourself ,..

Had a mouse nest on the shoot do that last year. Enough came out to seem like it was working, but wouldn't flow right when planting. Couldn't see ot either til I stuck a stick up there and part came out.

That's kinda cold Frank. Research has shown that seed depth uniformity and soil trench and seed soil contact have more effect on yield than every seed 6.47230 inches apart. The seed drum has to turn smoothly on the graphite base and the cut-off brush must be adjusted up or down for different seed size. I've seen Cyclos that the seed drum hasn't been off in years and people say they are all crap. Just sayen ......Ron
