prep for paint

I have cast tractor housings that have all the paint sandblasted off and then sat for over a year in a shed. They are all rusty know. What is the best way to prep them for painting?I would like to paint all cast stuff first before I do the tin work. Thank Bob

Any of the phosphoric acid rust converters. Just be sure it is watery thin though. You will need to brush it around some to help it to work in. After you get all the rust converted flush it off good with water and a brush, then wipe it dry with rubbing alcohol on a towel so that you don't get flash rust. I like SEM rust converter. It is pricey but goes a long way.

I've painted 4 tractors. The first time I spent a lot of prep time, used good paints. After I use my tractors they look just like they did before I painted them. I ask myself, why go through all the work if you plan to use the tractors? All my tractors are working girls, more like pigs. A paint job is like putting lipstick on a pig. The pig is going to roll around in the mud. That's what pigs do.

Get a primer that will convert the rust, then paint. Never leave any metal exposed or it will rust. On my rusty equipment, I'll always use a rustolum primer for heavy rust. I would take a wire brush and remove most of the rust, then paint it.

Would have been a lot simpler to have shot a coat of primer as soon as the items were sandblasted. But we live and learn.

That being said, most any auto body supply store should have a line of rust convertors and advice.

I agree with show crop to use something with phosphoric acid. I use metal ready from POR 15, just spray it on and let it work. Maybe hit it with a wire brush if the rust is thicker. It's great stuff to use directly after blasting cause it will stop the flash rust for quite some time. I also tend to use it on weld repairs especially when I don't have time to paint.
