DUMP TRAILER QUESTION

I am looking at dump trailers and would like to hear from those who have them. Do I want a scissor lift or will dual cylinders work well? I have heard guys say the straight cylinders don't dump as well as scissor lifts.

All depends on the design, I have seen trailers and trucks of either type that worked great, and also ones that didn't. Adequate dump angle is important, but also look at the geometry when it's down and make sure the cylinder has good leverage to start the dumping when down.

My 10k dump has two cylinders, no problems in 5 years. My friend has a 14k dump and his is a sissor jack, no problems either. If I recall, you have to go to the bigger trailers to get sissor and you pay for it.

If you have issues with twin cylinders good chance you are overloading trailer.

My son and I have had several over the years and the only ones that would come close to dumping the rated load were scissor dumps and they still struggled. His current dump is a 14,000 lb Big Tex and it is the only one either of us have had that will dump it's rated load .The empty traiper weighs a little over 3200 LBS and it will dump 11,000 with no problem

Problems with dumping are not inherent to the hoist type, any of them properly designed and applied will dump a load off a trailer. The problems are due to under designed systems required meet a given sales price. Some of the bargain brands are downright laughable. Bottom line is you price shop to the bottom dollar you can expect to own an under designed trailer that has problems not only dumping problems but problems with every other system and also will be a rust bucket in 3-4 years.
The lone legit complaint about the twin cylinder hoists is a load that is not only very heavy but badly off center will will twist the bed as the easy side will go up firs sometimes leaving a permanent twist in the bed.
I own a Pronovost made in Canada. Paid a premium price for it 15 years ago and have never been sorry I spent the extra $ to get a quality dump trailer.

A lot depends on how much weight you are dumping and how much common sense you use in loading the trailer to start with.I have a 10ft 10,000 lb gross trailer with a single cylinder
that I can haul about 7,500 lbs on it and with the trailer wt gross the 10,000 and have no problem dumping things like lime.IF I load it evenly over the trailer and mostly in the center of the trailer. If I loaded all the wt to the front and to one side I'd have major problems.Thats all the trailer I need because if I need to haul more its better for me to hire a dump truck.

I've got a Big Tex 7000 GVRW dump-trailer and love it. Single cylinder and not scissors. Works fine with any load I can fit on it. I bought it new last year and my only complaint is one of the Dexter axles went up in smoke the first 40 miles I used it. Trailer made in Texas and axles in Elkhart, Indiana. Uses Chinese bearings and one set of races was never even installed. So, under warranty, Dexter gave me a bunch of new Chinese parts.

Traditional Farmer,
My 10k dump is all the trailer my truck can handle. Empty it about 3k. I don't like to haul more than 6-7k. Trailer pulls nice and dumps great with 2 cylinders. I too load it evenly over the tires and have about 800# tongue weight or about 3/4 to 1 inch compression on rear springs measured from top of tire to inside wheelwell.

I will also recommend getting a combo tailgate and powercoat. A friend bought a new trailer with regular paint and his is rusting in 6 months.

Something to think about. My friends 14k trailer with scissor lift empty weighs over 4k. The axles are set back too far from tongue. It wasn't built using the rule of thumb where to put the axles. When I load it I have to be careful not to put too much weight in the front or it will overload the truck.

A gooseneck would be better, but his is a ball hitch.

So he can haul a 10k load mostly over the wheels. I can haul 7 k evenly distributed.

I have a Crysteel dump bed on the 81 F350 and it has a 2 stage scissor lift. I think they call it their combo hoist ? It starts out lifting slow with more power to get the load moving and then part of it pivots and then it moves faster.

Check the dump angle before you buy. If it's less than 45? you will have trouble getting some things to slide out. A lot of the twin cylinder dump type only dump to 40? and some even less than that.

My son has one, off the wall built in Southern Fl, he brought it used down their and brought it back to Mi. I would say it has 5000# axles and a single cylinder lift, with 6ft. steel sides. He's had it about 5-6 years and uses it almost everyday in his business. The only thing he's done is tires and lights on it and replaced the steel floor. Its a double acting cylinder on the lift and he runs a car battery in it. I have hauled 10,000# of lime on it and 4 yards of gravel and sand with it. I have yet to see it not lift what I put on it and haven't heard of it not lifting what he puts on it. I'm sure its not uncommon for it to be overloaded.

Go with a name brand and you won't regret it. I bought this PJ 14k 8 years ago and it has been a great trailer. Just used it all day yesterday. I only had a problem dumping once when the quarry put 6 1/2 ton of sand in it....I did put a bigger battery in it.

I have a Big Tex 70sr dump trailer that i bought a few months ago . Single cylinder does a great job. There for a month or so it was like permanently hooked to my truck. Hauling gravel to the house. The remote wire comes all the way to the truck so i drive and spread gravel. All those years i been shoveling dirt and rock out of the bed of my truck now i just press the button and drive away. Life is good LOL
