overhaul a BS engine

Is it ever feasible(cost) to overhaul a briggs engine. It is a Twin II 18 hp out of an older Woods zero turn. It has a broken rod and some damage to the crank. Haven't done any pricing yet just checking to see if anyone has been down this road.

bradiniowa- I have a 16 hp BS engine on a generator. The engine bit the dust and locked up. I checked the price of rebuild kits....For just about the same price, I can buy a Predator of same hp from HF and just bolt it on.

PS, I have also done that with the 6.5 hp hf engines to power my TroyBuilt tiller and a log splitter too.

Seems it's cheaper to replace than rebuild.

I have a big junk pile full of engines. In today's world cheaper to just buy another engine.Shop time and parts cost just not worth a rebuild.

I agree.
I have an older Craftsman with a 12 hp Briggs in it. Tennant mows half an acre with it. The engine was hammering hard.
Found a good engine on CL for $100.
Has two seasons on it now.

A friend lost a rod in a craftsmen mower, 18 HP single cylinder
He bought a new Briggs from small engine warehouse for around $800. Google smallenginewarehouse.com

I have found it way cheaper to rebuild the engines by myself. It costs under 200 dollars, verses buying a new engine for 800 if you want pricing for parts, you can call here to millers repair center at 717 362 8252

When buying a used engine make sure you hear it run. If you don't you might get an engine that is as bad as yours.

Depends on what you need. If all you do is hone the cylinders, put in new rings, and replace gaskets, sure you can do it yourself for $200.

If you're talking about a broken rod or other internal damage, then you've got all sorts of expensive parts and machine work staring you in the face, and that absolutely cannot be done for $200.

Yes, it contributes to our "throw away" society, but there's also "penny wise, pound foolish" to think about here. Why spend as much or more than the cost of a new engine on an old engine and have no guarantee that it will hold together for more than a few minutes when you're done? At least a new engine has a warranty so if it doesn't hold together you don't have to buy another new engine.

Go look in the Garden Tractor forum. Look at {Kohler Replacement}. There are some very good deals on Flebay with end of year engines with prices knocked down. Some outfit in Georga. Just what you are looking for.

If a rod is broken there may also be some cracks or hole in the block. It wouldn't take too long to tear it down and see what it needs.

Did one last fall. 2 rods, rings, gaskets and a few other things were around $300 if I recall. Had to use muratic acid to burn the aluminum off the crank, then polished it.

I was in the Mower/engine repair business for several years. Most air cooled engines, particulary B&S, except the Vangard are through away.
