Agco power engines

I see in the new terra gator sales brochure the new terra gator has a 7 cylinder agco Power engine . I don't think I've see a 7 cylinder engine before have you?

This engine has been around for a while in the MF9540 and 9560 combines. The largest Gleaner combines and some the MT challenger tracked tractors use it as well.

There was an experimental 9=cylinder in-line engine developed in the late 30's, but it was decided that the public was already used to in-line 8 cylinder engines, so the 9-cylinder was never produced. In tests, the 9-cylinder was a much smoother engine than the 8 cylinder engines. Oh; it burned premium gas also!

AGCO Power (formally known as Sisu Diesel) has only two cylinder bores and two stroke dimensions across their entire product line. Their largest 6-cyl is an 8.4 liter which isn't enough for the larger combines and sprayers. The 9.8L 7-cyl engine was a way to get more displacement and power without re-tooling for a larger bore or stroke by combining off-the-shelf heads from a 3-cyl and 4-cyl.

This concept was carried even further with the new V-12 that powers the largest Challenger tractors. That engine is essentially just two 8.4L sixes sharing a common block and crank.

Didn't Volvo cars have a 5 cylinder engine too? I know at least one car brand did and it was suposed to run smoother than even number cylinders.

My memory is hazy on that; one of the old professors in Ag Engr. told us about it (That was a long time ago). He gave us two stories on different engines that were developed and never put on the market. One was about an engine that Oliver developed and the other was a Pontiac engine. My memory might be wrong, but I'm thinking that Oliver tried the 9-cylinder engine.

I had a 1987 Audi with a 5 cylinder engine. Smoothest engine I've ever owned, and seemed to have a lot of torque at low engine speeds. It had a 5 speed stick shift and is the only car I've ever owned that I wanted to really wind it up and see what it would do. I didn't though, dang it.

Im not sure how the 7 cylinder engine will work. But I do know the AGCO power(Sisu) engines are the best item that AGCO has. They have been very durable and have amazing torque and power. Now if they can just get all of their electronics figured out......

We have one of the new Terragator 9300B's with the inline 7. It has a different exhaust note than the Cat C-13's in the other 9203 Terragators we have. Also is significantly quieter. Only have about 500 hours on the machine so far, and the biggest problem we have had with it is air filter issues. The filter seems undersized for the application, and the intake is in a bad spot. Already have changed air filters three times in this rig from plugging, compared to the 9203's with C-13.

Yep, the '93 Volvo 850 was the beginning of the inline 5-cylinder in their US-sold cars that ended in 2014 with S60 T5 as the last of the 5-bangers. A really fine engine with great drivability, lots of power when turbocharged, and long lived if serviced properly. I work on many of them that are over 10 years old and over 150K miles. I own a '98 V70 with 169K on it, still going strong.
Mercedes built a 3.0 liter 5-cylinder diesel in 1974 that sold for $12,000 and was known as the slowest car over $10,000 at that time.
