hi i have a late 60,s ford backhoe with 3cyl diesel.it has the inline injection pump,my issue is fuel leakage out the pump breather when engine is throttled more than an idle. also had found fuel in oil pan, tractor had been parked approx.2mos. transfer pump was replaced couple yrs.ago when wouldnt start. didnt know to look here again or something internal in pump. tractor probably used 25hrs or less per year. any help would be appreaciated, thanks

There should be an overflow vent tube on the pump, make sure it's not plugged as it should let any plunger bleed off fuel out the tube. It's probably plugged whenever fuel comes out the breather. No more than you use it I'd change the cambox oil and run it. The vent tube banjo bolt orifice may be plugged also, make sure it's open too.

Is it a Simms pump ? They are made for a small amount of fuel to leak by and excess should drip out of the "pig tail" tube . You should drain and add oil when you change the engine oil . If the pig tail is crimped or plugged up it will fill until it comes out of the vent . Could be the pump is leaking to the point it needs rebuilt .

I copied this from a previuos post , sorry I did not get the posters name .

[i:6765c9af71]Simms pumps are supposed to leak diesel into the governor housing, that is why Ford specifies that you change the oil every engine oil change. The oil is there to lubricate the governor mechanism not the pumping elements, those and the cam are lubricated by allowing diesel to leak past the pumping plungers. There should be a short "pigtail" pipe on the cam box to allow the diesel to leak out.

I was trained on the pump operation by Ford and spent time in a diesel shop servicing the pumps.[/i:6765c9af71]

If it's a Simms pump.... the breather could be plugged. It happens... but the more likely scenario is that the diaphragm is bad in the lift
pump. If the engine has a stumble or miss, that would make it more likely. It's not impossible that the injection pump is completely
buggered... but it's unlikely.

checked pigtail and banjo bolt not blocked, cleaned breather and took lift pump off to see any leakage with lines intact,no sign off leakage at pump.about 24oz diesel ran out when lift pump was removed. put all back and ran after 20 min mid throttle pigtail first drips steadily then comes out breather pretty bad,to much to operate with this much on ground. believe you guy may be right about pump teardown and rebuild time.
