DEF Question

A guy gave me a brand new jug of diesel exhaust fluid , it said on the box that 30 some percent was Urea and the rest water, since urea is in fertilizer and ammonia nitrate, could this DEF fluid be watered down and sprayed on crops such as corn? Just wondering if anyone has tried that.

Well it is just urea and water so I don't know why you couldn't I think it's a little to expensive to go over much ground with though .

I have no experience with DEF,(and I hope it stays that way) so I have to make some guesses. What does it weigh? Maybe 9#/gal? 9x30%= 2.7. As I recall urea is 46% N? 2.7x46%= 1.24#N? Might green up a little of your lawn!

We use about 5000 gal a week at work and I had some in a bucket were I had bled a line out so I dumped it on the grass and it grew just like 28 does when you spill it on the grass, a dead spot with really tall grass around it.

So, a cheaper source for DEF? Make your own? So that's why it's good for the environment; does nothing for exhaust emissions but spreads fertilizer to offset the emissions! I can believe the EAP could come up with that :)

No reason you could not, just a lot more expensive, make someone a deal on it and buy some real stuff and pocket the difference.

We don't know if the stuff is "fresh" or cloudy/got some crystals in it.

If it is anything but perfect, it WOULD be better used as fertilizer.

Attended expo for major diesel engine company. Company rep said DEF has about 1 year life span in the fuel tank or in the jug. Question was ask by chief of volunteer fire company who had fire trucks with lots of in the fire house time.
