the windows experiment in PA

I lifted the windows out of the way to weed and cultivate, and harvest a little for a salad. It was an experiment. The results surprised me,because it went through some really cold nights a while back. Its not so much a big deal, much easier to buy some lettuce,,but it is a challenge....I never played golf or did sports,,,,I guess my garden playing can be explained the same way?

Larry I had much rather be doing what you are doing as playing golf or sitting on my rear watching a bunch of spoiled overpaid athletes. Especially with the green thumb you have! At least you are producing something usefull. I have always admired your abilities such as gardening, stonemasonry and such. I have dabbled at gardening most of my life and am still learning. Keep on growing! Lee

Im still learning too,I Never thought the window experiment would work when we had some 20 degree weather a while back.Best part is the windows were scrap, and the lettuce was grown from seed so it was not costly.I just have to be careful now it doesnt get too hot under the windows,I may remove them soon.Im thinking of putting screens the same way to keep varmints away from eating it.

It worked well, nice early season greens ! They're a staple in my diet, I'll take garden grown any day, but the organic store bought spring greens are pretty good, either or they'll keep you healthy. I have 1/2 a red bell pepper daily with mine, some cuke slices, tomatoes, the red bell pepper gives you good dose of vitamin C. I was surprised that I could find all this organically at the local store. Even the small grape tomatoes are actually good, not as good as the garden but not terrible like other store bought ones I've had. I'm not an enviro or health nut, just like to have at least one healthy meal a day, I don't care for the pesticides/insecticides on my garden produce. I'm envious of those greens you have there LOL !

My daughter got us started on Kale.It is really good for you. It is easy to grow and is very cold hearty. If you e mail me your adress,I will gladly send you some seed.My eMail is open(I think)

Neat Larry. Now that sugaring is over my thoughts are turning to the garden also. My transplants are doing well so far. "Maters are developing their second set of leaves at this point.

Beautiful stuff Larry!
I have always loved all kinds of vegetables.
When I was just a little kid, I would take what you have in that bowl and make a sandwich.
Leaf lettuce, scallions, sliced radishes (my favorite) with two slices of bread with home-churned butter....makes my mouth water today!

I only picked two radishes,i got itchy,,,they are supposed to get bigger, but I Couldnt control myself.I rinsed it off before The wife took the picture,it didnt pull out of the ground that shiny,,,(a little cheating on the picture taking) lol

Larry,

Your experiement has worked out great! Betting that was a fantastic salad.

Around here, the darn wind would move the frames to a neighboring farm... leaving the glass shards in our garden. :(

Hey Larry your comment about golf reminded me of something. Wife is an avid golfer plays 3 times a week; I play 9 holes occasionally with her and her friends. When I play I've worn a shirt that reads on the back " My Dad taught me to WORK not play golf; please be patient".
