removing metal barn roof

Hey Guys I've got a gable barn roof that I want to replace the tin on, it's built with rafters and purlins style. It's probably 18-20' at ridge and steep. Any ideas on how to remove the old tin? I don't care about saving it because it's already used with the other owner put it up. I tried the 2x4 from the inside hitting upward, nail too good. I'm thinking about building a roof ladder out of 2x4's and hanging it on the ridge and doing it that way. Any and all suggestions welcome. Thank you in advance.

Once you get the first panel off you can stand or sit on the purlins and reach across to get at the next panel. Not a lot of fun but it is one way to do it.

Get up on top and start pulling nails. A 'cats paw' puller may be needed. The nails may be 'ring shank',so they will fight all the way

Rent an aerial unit like Old did to cut down a tree? Make sure to use the safety harness.

Most of the heads will eventually pull off anyhow, so save yourself a lot of time and get a horse hoof-nipper and just intentionally nip the heads off. Once you get the sheet off, hammer down any nail shanks that protrude, and move on to the next sheet.

I have to take off a few sheets of wall tin, and need to put it back on later. Will use the same method, and just move the sheet up (or down) a fraction of an inch so I've got new board to screw to (not nails this time) though the original holes in the tin.

I watched a Morton Building's crew replace a roof on a firehouse under warranty. They used long handled ( 3 foot ) nipper to pull all the nails. They made short work of it with the right tools.

A nipper blue bar and a cats paw and go at it. Peeling them off with a telehandler will work but you could possible lift loose rafters that way. Not way saying you will but it is possible. Last corrugated roof I removed was on a hay shed I was tearing down so I wanted nail free rafters. I started the nail with the cats paw or blue bar depending how tight the nail was and finished pulling it out with either the blue bar or nippers depending if the head was still on the nail or not. It took awhile but I got the job done.

Because I can't live in farming alone I am a carpenter by trade, self employed and living/working in a rural area, I have replace many steel roofs on farm building, the guys thet tell you to hop up there and start pulling nails are spot on in my opinion. That's how we do it, pull the nails and airmail the sheet then drive the nails that you bust the heads off of. I would make sure you have roof purlins on no more than 24@ centers as well befor you install the new steel. This is what I do anyway

Did one from the topside when I was younger, saving the sheets. Worked well. I used a pair of hammers, 3 ft pinch bar and a set of nippers. I never cut a nail head off just pulled the ones I couldn't pound the pinch bar into the lead washer.

So tell me why did a metal roof under
warranty need replaced? I thought they
should last forever.

Thanks Guys for all the replies, it looks like I'm going to be up on the roof for a couple days. Not looking forward to it but it will be nice when done.
