pressure gauge

The pressure gauge on my 5100 White planter has failed. Dealer wants $257.00 for new one. It goes from 0 to 5 inches of water. What does that mean? I can find one on-line goes 0 to 5 psi. Is that the same thing? $48.00

Oh my! So the needle would not even move on a psi. gauge as I only run from 1.5-2.5 inches of water depending on the size of seed.

5" of water is also known as 5" of water column, or W.C. That is probably an oil filled gauge and accurate. If you could find the same fitting on another gauge and that reads 5" of W.C., it probably would work. Oil filled ones, the needle does not bounce around anywhere as much. They're more desirable, and more expensive, too.

I dont know if this helps but I googled to see what was available in that low of a pressure range. Im sure there are more if you look around.

here's one up to 15 inches of water for 55 http://www.omega.com/googlebase/product.html?pn=PGL-25L-15&gclid=Cj0KEQjw0dy4BRCuuL_e5MeqmNABEiQAq8iNI7tI3rRWiywMYhw5eKB0gBNNAETC5NG6eDo0caAeBpAaAkVg8P8HAQ

A normal air pressure guage will not work, btdt. You have to have a guage that measures water column inches. I had to replace the one on my 5100 last year, bought a large unit at Amazon and made a bracket to mount it on top of the lift cylinder frame and ran a hose to the tube, works good and I can see the numbers and needle. flying Belgian,

I'm not a expert on low pressure stuff in any way, but, I built an addition onto my old farm house about 15 years ago. As a part of that project, I installed a propane furnace, kitchen range, and water heater. I'm not absolutely sure of the pressure for those appliances but I'm almost positive that I had to adjust the pressure regulator on the outside of the house to 8 column inches of water. I bought a gauge at Home Depot to make the adjustment.

That's the only time I ever used the gauge and frankly, I have no idea where it is right now.

Good luck finding a replacement gauge for your planter.

The 5100 has been gone several years, and the JD I have now is vacuum, so I might be confused. But before giving up on that gauge, make sure there isn't a breather vent in the back plugged, or that there's moisture in it, or that your inlet fitting is plugged.

The other posters have given you good suggestions, WC is WC, does not matter where you get the gauge from.

Water column is a measure of pressure. They are very very small. The gas pressure on your BBQ out door cooker is about 14 Inches water column. It is maybe 1/3 of a pound of air pressure. Looked on flea bay and there are a lot of them. On your gauge what is the maximum pressure number? Here is the flebay number for a gauge thet goes up to 35 inches water column. Not ANWHERE near that money. Let us know. Jeffcat 291735250610.

Use Rich in Wis link to Amazon, that's like the one I bought. I think mine goes to 5 or 7#s, fewer numbers, large dial, easier to read from the tractor. No regrets. Chris

Actually if you do reloading it would be pounds, ounces, grams, and grains. A penny weighs around 3 1/2 grams and grains is even smaller. Inches W.C. is a very small measurement, like you blowing out candles or blowing up a ballon. He'll find a gauge but that dealer is a total rip off.
