One of my uncles had a 4-door like that in very good condition. He went duck hunting one day and when he got back he reached in and grabbed the shotgun off the rear seat. The shotgun went off and blew a hole through the rear door; he was just enough to the side to escape the shot. He had been through WWI without getting wounded and his luck was still with him.
 
Ford had a 2-speed axle that was available for their trucks. Maybe it would fit a car also?
 
I have worked on only one model A so I am certainly not and expert on them. That is my disclaimer! LOL The only two speed I have been involved with in a Model A truck was a planetary setup added behind the transmission. As I understand it was initially used behind the three speed car transmission on the early AA truck with a worm drive rear end and was dealer installed. Shifting was done with your heel. It was not a shift on the go setup, you had to be stopped to shift it so you were stuck in either a low range or lower range. At 25 MPH in high range third gear it feels like the engine is going to blow up. Low range is possibly half that speed. Later AA's with a ring and pinion rear end might have had an aftermarket two speed axle of some sort as there were several companies making after market gear train parts for the A's.
 
That story brings back a memory. I was with my friends in his dad's car must have been in the early 60's. We were driving around shooting anything that moved. Mostly rabbits. His shot gun was leaning up against the front seat. He was loading it. For some reason it went off, and blew a hole in the roof of his dad's car. Actually there were quite a few options. You had the Columbia 2 speed rear. Had to change out the rear of the car. You had several in line overdrive units that required the Tube to be changed. There was also a 5 speed drop in transmission. Today you can buy a brand new over drive from Mitchell for like $1000.oo but is a super slick unit. The Originals and latter were Borg Warner, Laycock, and the Columbia Rear.
 
Yep, quite a few optional overdrives for Model As and such available today.
No factory or aftermarket units available back in the Model A days.
The Columbia 2-speed axle was originally an aftermarket unit that replaced the rear axle assembly. They made the first unit for Fords for the '34 models.
Ford actually began offering them as an option around '37.
When I was a kid, a local farmer had a '40 Ford woody with the Columbia 2 speed axle. He used that thing like a truck.....nobody knew that the woodies would eventually become extremely valuable.

Well the "old" is happening... but don't think the "valuable" will ever occur. Have to check book on a 97 Geo. LOL
 
This is a 1933 chevy that was bought new by my great grandfather and stayed in the family until mid 1960's. Then got sold out of family. My dad bought it in 1999, back in the family where it will stay.
