I had my annual appointment in albany with the doctors who took out my cancerous prostate in 2004. everything AOK. next checkup not until next year.

you guys who have put it off--- GET YOUR PSA LEVEL CHECKED, at least for a baseline number. i had no symptoms or discomfort, finally went for a recommended-when -you-turn-50 physical when i was 54. psa was rising rapidly. cancer was ready to break out of the sheath around the prostate when they got it out. another 6 mos and I would have been pushing up daisies years ago.

life is good.

I've had all the recommended check-ups and tests but nothing significant has been found. However, we all hear about those who didn't and died much younger than they would have if it had been discovered early. When you're forty you don't think much of wanting to see seventy.

That's good news!
I agree about getting the PSA test.
One of my all time favorite musicians - Frank Zappa, died of prostate cancer. I have gotten my PSA tests in his honor ever since.

Bill, you could've been me posting this. No symptoms; only the PSA test indicating a problem. The second PSA test showed an increase and that triggered a 'biopsy'. That put my Prostate at fully involved with Cancer. Had it removed a year ago and last week's PSA test showed undetectable cancer. I'm 67 and if it hadn't been for the Medicare required Physical I'd likely be no more. Please fellas, get that test done! You want to watch your Grandchildren graduate from High School? I'm sure you do, even if you never did.

When I was 70 the doctor quit checking PSA. He said if you get it now, you'll probably die with it,not from it!

I had mine removed three years ago. My PSA a couple weeks ago was something like.0002. I feel good and am cancer free. I also passed my colonoscopy a couple weeks ago. I get my PSA checked twice a year. So its defiantly a curable cancer if you stay on top of it and catch it early enough.

I will be 10 years out this coming November. Have to get checked by the urologist this Friday. No symptoms at all but Dr. caught it during a DOT physical.Caught it very early and cancer free so far--life is good!!

So far, so good for me but I haven't had a PSA for a while. No tinckle-trouble either. New doc says they are not using them so much any more due to the number of false-positives that lead to unneeded biopsies. Wife's cousins, three brothers, all got PC in their 40's.

It's been 15 years for me. Saved by a psa test - no symptoms. I was in my mid 50's and it's really aggressive when you get it that young. My friend, Len, got it the same time as me but didn't catch it early. Watched him suffer over a year and a half and die at age 56. You don't want to take a chance with not having your psa checked annually.

It's 13 years for me. Prostate cancer was the farthest thing from my mind. Even though I was going in for a wellness check every six months I'd never even heard of a PSA test until the doctor called me at home and told me I had flunked it. Biopsy confirmed, and a couple of months later I had prostatectomy, and I've been clear since.

By all means get checked, guys, but if you test positive be sure you explore all possible remedies before committing to surgery. Some new treatment regimes have come along since I was on the table, some that don't involve surgery. Explore them all. Surgery may ultimately be the best choice, but remember that your urologist is a plumber and a surgeon. He will have a bias toward surgery because he knows that by removing the prostate he will most likely solve the problem, quickly and cleanly---from his point of view.

The Doc. found mine when I went for a DOT check up. The blood test was to look for diabetes and found my PSA was high. The Doc. said he would seed it. I said why bother with it ? Why not just cut it out and be done with it. So we did. and it was rough going for a few weeks after but finally got healed up and that was 11 years ago ,Still get a O on my PSA every year. A lot of younger guys don't want to have it taken out because it will ruin there man hood. Well don't worry, the Doc. can make you better than you ever were and Medicare will pay for it. So don't put it off. I lost two neighbors because they didn't want to loose there man hood. Now look at where they are.

Get it check men. My dad put it off until his knees started hurting and peed his pants. He died 88 days later. Because it runs in the family I was 4 times greater to get it. Started having it checked an PSA was coming up fast. Got on a drug and have been find now for 4 years. Check it every years. They said they will check it until I am 75. Hope I live through doing stupid stuff on the farm until then. LOL

I also went through it at 59, had surgery and good since. (now 70). For those that are Vietnam Vets, prostrate cancer is covered under VA agent orange rules. See a county veteran services officer or an American Legion or VFW service officer. You don't have to be a member to see them.
