Farmall M Diesel...........

There's an auction coming up this Saturday that has a "non-running" M diesel on it. I'm going for other reasons, but I wondered if that M was worth getting excited about. Don't know why it's non-running. Most likely the pump, and I recall a time some years ago when having the pump rebuilt on an M diesel cost more than the tractor was worth. Haven't heard lately.

Any input?

Looked at some 35 years ago to run my sawmill. Cracked heads steered me away from them forever.

The cost to repair vs. overall value hasn't changed any. I have a 400D. It did not run on diesel when I bought it and just needed a thorough fuel system cleaning and new filters, also lift pump seal and bushings.

I would think the price would be a little higher than a regular M (non-runner) due to potential parts value but not by much. A few years ago I talked to a guy on a pulling sled crew who had brought one back and he had spent around 5 grand just on the motor.

Just a case by case basis as to whether one is non-running dead or non-running but ran when parked.

MR Goose: I like the MD and have worked on them BUT As others said they are exspencive and a pain to overhaul compared to a gas M. One of those I would almost want to see running and Check fluids for issues. Now can you buy it cheap enough so you have a way out???? Does it have a TA and live power set up???

Goose what area are you in State wise? Here in MN you can buy a decent runner for 1500 and a nice one somewhere 1750-2500

A non runner is a very risky thought for not much more I would buy a runner you know what u have
