House fires

The tread below reminds me of an experience I had several years ago. I was hauling a load of hay home when I spotted smoke coming from a house. I pulled over the best I could to investigate and sure enough, smoke was coming from around eaves of fairly new house. I banged on door and windows, shouted FIRE, but no response. I did not have a cell phone, so I went to nearby house to get them to call fire dept. There were numerous cars in driveway and lights on inside, but no response. I then went across street where man & son were splitting firewood. They had unobstructed view of smoke billowing from their neighbor's house. I asked if they would please call fire dept. They said "Oh yeh, I wondered what all that smoke was about!" Meantime there were numerous cars passing by, obviously concerned that I could not pull entirely off road with my truck and trailer loaded with hay. I will wonder till my last day why I was the only person concerned that a house was on fire!! I guess this had a happy ending because the fire was confined to the laundry room where a clothes dryer had caught fire (actually the fire dept. did more damage than the fire did. LOL!).

Yea but what would have happened had you not stopped? The whole house could have gone up.

A lot of people are unaware of what is going on around them! I notice when my wife and I are traveling that we see different things, personal priorities, I guess, and of course one of us is always driving!

Neighbour saw another neighbours boat being stolen and called cops. Neighbour thanked them by telling them to mind their own business in the future!

Neighbor must have had the boat pre-sold to the insurance company (but the ins. co. just didn't know about it yet!).

On the other side of the coin, western Washington has the STP (Seattle to Portland) bicycle ride every year. 10,000 riders, riding from Seattle to Portland in one or 2 days. At about 6 Am on the second day, some riders noticed smoke coming from an old house in my neighborhood. While one called 911, several others went into the house and rescued an elderly house-bound woman. After aid car got there, they resumed their ride. I think they got some kind of award.

I remember back in the late 50,s I came up on another truck that was on fire. I had a friend riding with me. He garbed the fire extinguisher and ran up to the truck ,The driver hollered at George and said this is my fire if you want to fight a fire go start one of your own. He said he had waited too long for this Junker to catch on fire too have you come along and put it out. By the time the fire company got there the fire was mostly out and our extinguisher was empty. The truck was a total loss. I guess the man had had all the trouble with that old F 8 Ford that he could stand.

Years back when I worked 2nd shift I was driving home one night, and saw flames shooting in the air a ways down the road yet.As I got closer,I saw a house on fire just down a side road.I pulled up across the road from the house and could feel the heat thru my side window of my truck. As I was wondering if I could get close enough to the house to even try to wake someone, the owners,a dad and son, pulled up from the opposite direction.I got out and asked, was anyone else home, they said,no.Just then the gas grill on the front porch exploded. They had a couple of cars pulled to the front of the house,so they decided to try to move them. They would not hardly start due to the heat.A neighbor ran up and said he had called the fire department. The wife arrived ,and yelled at the husband, what did you do now?And she left!As I saw the fire trucks coming,I decided to leave and go home before they blocked the road. The whole one end of the house, bedroom end,I think, was burnt to the ground. No one was hurt, but it sure scared me,and I hope never to see another.Mark

this is one we had midday last fall-my hose line crews really had a hard time getting in and finding the fire
