The JD 1020 gas brought $2500. The JD 3020 gas brought $4900. The Ford 5000 Gas brought $5100. The Case VAC brought $800 and followed me home. IH "H" with good tires, ran nice brought $875, was local tractor.

I thought the tractors went cheap for the condition they where in. All and all the sale was down in price. I bought more than I planned on. Time will tell if it was a good buy or not.

They run like crap on the new formulas of gas. Constant carburetor issues. Fouling spark plugs. Will not take throttle and if you richen them up to take throttle then they plugs will foul in a short time. Many will not start when shut off hot. Just an all around PIA to fool with.

It is the new generation gas engines. 3000 and 4000 series. I had a JD 4020 gas I used for years on the TMR wagon. When the oxygenated fuels it became a night mare to keep it running. I overhauled it and even went back in and tried higher compression pistons. It still would not run right. It did with the older fuels but not the newer stuff.

Thanks for the results. I saw the pictures of the 5000. It didn't have original paint on the fenders, but looked really good, down the original seat. The gloss gray paint on the fenders surface rusted pretty quickly from just sitting. I'm surprised they didn't fix the oil leaks. I'd pay $5100 all day long for something like that. I have a narrow front end for my 7000 that would look really good permanently under it.

(quoted from post at 20:04:09 03/26/16) a lot of guys don't like gas tractors. bill

and the gas now days just doesn't store well in tractors. Out here I can't fill a tank or someone will siphon it off. If I put a little in, the low humidity sucks it dry and gums up the carburetor. I have diesel tractors that have set with fuel in them for 5 years and I can guarantee they will fire right up...don't even need a battery, just give them a little tug.

How about this guy? The turbo seems odd....

Thanks for the update. Like to have had the 1020. Dad had a 820 3cyl diesel with a 37 loader we used for over 20 years than put the loader on a 2040. He kept that tractor after selling the farm on a half acre lot with a house. It was the last thing he let go.

Owners not knowing how to tune one up.
I've had a 4020 gas since around 1990 ? went over it good right after I got it and have not touched it since. It's ready to go anytime. And yes it sits a lot as only put about 600 hours on it in all those years. Single biggest improvement was when I put a Zenith carb. on instead of the alum. Marvel Schebuler one.
I have had more problems with my newer diesel ! Only have 600 hours total on it and a darn injector had it's stem break and giving me a misfire. Cost me over $ 100.00 to get it back firing again !

I went to a sale here in Lancaster yesterday. The early 4020 Gas with 158 loader and cab brought $4900.

The 4020 narrow front with a diesel combine engine brought $7700.

1066 with cab and duals brought $10,400. The auctioneers hired help tried to drive up bids by starting it and moving it. First he couldn't figure out how to start it, and then he shifted it wrong and got it between gears. They shut down the auction for 10 minutes while they tore the shifter quadrant apart to get it back into shape!

You will be pleasently supprised with the VAC when you get it runnig good. They are like the little train that thought it could and did. And now you have an excuse to join us on the Case forum. There is a vast wealth of VAC knowledge and tricks of the breed there.

Estate sale here yesterday, 2 3020, 3 A's and 1 B and a Ford 2N. All rediculas high in price. The Ford did run and decent looking rear tires but otherwise looked like in came out of a parts yard, patched hole in left side of transmission, brought $850, anything more than rear tires was too much. Late B did run rough like whole tractor brought $2,800, was not a $800 tractor, one A did run others not stuck 47 pressed frame $1,800. 3020 Wide front with cab had running I think for about 10 seconds and sounded like it was going to run away when shut down If remember $4,800, Bidder was on phone, bought both 3020 and thought he got a bargin and could take then someplace and make several thousand. Both should have been headed for parts yard due to condition I saw, seems he saw a diamond in rough. Things had not been used for at least 5 years, all buildings falling in, used to be a nice dairy farm. Did get the one thing I was after and that was a 13-7 Oliver steel wheel drill that was still in good condition for $200, would have gone to $450

I wonder how many times those old JD 1010's change hands....probably the #1 tractor wanna be farmers get suckered into - hey, it's a Deere!

Back when I was still farming and the Ford tractor garage was still in bussinues he was also farming and his tractor was a 5000 with turbo on diesel. My 5000 was gas.

Thanks for posting. I sold one piece Sat but I now feel bad about not going as I could sell that 1020 real easy. I am going to a sale in IL this Sat. maybe I can find one or two small tractors there. Tom
