ATV tire bead breaker help update

I just want to say THANK YOU to everyone that had given me ideas on how to break the tire beads on my 4 wheeler tires. To be honest I was somewhat skeptical about the handy man jack under the drawbar idea. But, this was an idea that I knew I could try in the shop. So I used the handy man jack idea and the drawbar under my ag hitch on my pickup to break the beads. I did leave some air in the tires as some of you told me to do. With some patience and tire rotations trying to break the beads it worked!! So I continued on and got all 4 tires off the rims on my parts wheeler. You guys are the best!! Thank you very much all of you. No wonder this site is so amazing! Now onto my farm 4 wheeler and get those tires switched around. Have a Happy Easter too!

While doing it that way may work it is also a very good way to get your self or others hurt badly. I know I would NEVER EVER try to do that but I have also worked in more then one tire shop so I know the correct way of doing it. A bead breaker tool is the only true safe way to do that job

aaahh its just a little tire, and i have broke many a beads on truck tires using the tractor drawbar. just need some sense while doing it.and sometime kids need to get hurt to learn thinks. even eat a little dirt to keep them healthy. how did we ever learn stuff if it was not by experimenting.dont learn a thing sitting in the house playing on the phones and computers without hands on experience. but yes always keep safty in mind.

Hi Old

There are many ways to get hurt doing lots of things, If a guy did nothing and stayed in bed long enough he'd either starve/get a bad infection and die or the roof would fall in and kill him . There are guys out there not smart enough to do some of these jobs. They are Darwin award candidates, and natural selection seems to work good for them.

If you have common sense and keep an eye on what you are doing and are cautious , The problems are usually minimal, even professionals have a bad day at some point. There are lots of different ways I have done things with farm type tires (I don't do passenger/ truck for highway speeds), would probably make you have a thousand fits, But everybody is still alive and has their fingers and toes/other body parts. Shock horror I don't have a 2 million dollar insurance policy either, just smart enough to know if it's safe or not to do it or want to use it after! .

The whole point it that is not the correct way to do a thing like that and I have seen many people who have and ended up in the E.R. with a broken leg or broke arm etc by doing it that way. I also will not use a loader bucket or run one over with a truck or tractor tire. I did 3 tires yesterday and used the correct tools. Common sense has a way of coming back and kicking you in the back sides the moment you goof one time.

I've changed hundreds, maybe more, tires using what you call improper tools. I can't remember ever even getting a scratch. You can goof off one time using "proper" tools and get hurt and some people could be wrapped in bubble wrap and get hurt. I've used a Handyman jack, front bucket and my favorite is a backhoe bucket or stabilizer and they all work fine and my back and shoulders are none worse for wear.
From my experience, the safety police is made up of accident prone folks. I may get hurt tomorrow but it will be from being stupid, not because of an "improper tool" that I used.

I have broke many beads with my hi lift jack. I put the jack into the receiver hitch of my pick up and press the tire bead down with the foot of the jack. Still have all my fingers.

Hi Loren
Thats a statement a guy can answer with one word "Exactly" If I had every single tool for every job I ever did, and some of them were such a pain to do even with the proper "tool" I never want to see them again. I'd have way more $'s in tools/equipment, If I had that kinda huge money to spend on every conceivable thing I would like or need. I sure wouldn't be farming or buying tools to fix everybody else's junk in my spare time with it L.O.L.
