Seems tough to find a good reliable haircut these days. My barber after 20 years is semi-retired now. So yesterday I went in search of one. First place I stopped into, there was a guy with an earring, another one that looked only half awake (sleep is kindof important when using surgically-sharp scissors near major arteries), and a girl who looked promising. So decided on the girl, but after 15 minutes she still hadn't finished with her customer who barely any hair to begin with.

So I moved on to another shop and decided that this was the place no matter what. After waiting 45 minutes, I ended up with a young bleach blond with a skull T-shirt named Destiny. LOL

Hahaha after I was about 40 I found out why dad never did mind being almost bald and keeping what he had left cut close

He always said I can wash everything with the same cloth and soap.....he was right lol my wife or daughter cut mine so no worries

Mom was a licensed beutishon all my life I think I have had my hair cut in a outside shop on maybe 2 different times

I'm going to cut mine today. Several years ago, I decided that I really didn't need hair. I bought clippers and trimmer. I cut as much as I can reach and then my wife cuts the rest. Cut my hair every month and never wait for anyone - nor pay anyone! The savings add up.

My wife cut my hair for over 40 years. Maybe went to a barber 3 times in those 40 years. Finally started going to an old barber shop in a small town 6 miles away. First time I went in there about 2 years ago, I commented that old man Levis had cut my hair the last time I was there. They looked at me funny and said he died about 20 years ago. Got a good laugh out of that.
Told them the story that Levis told me years ago. He cut hair in our little community as a young man and the customer would sit on a stump outside the local general store. A drunk guy sat down and laid a big pistol on his lap. He told Levis he wanted a haircut and a shave and if he cut him, He was going to shoot him. Levis did a good job and when he was finished, the drunk said "You shore are lucky you didn't cut me".
Levis said "Nope you shore are lucky. If I had cut you, I would have just gone on and cut your throat".

By the way, I pay $8 for a hair cut these days. Usually give them a 10 spot.

Forgot, as a kid I remember a haircut was 50 cents and there was a shoe shine stand in the shop. 10 cents.

I too want a reliable barber. Two of my favorite barbers of the past have retired, then passed on. I like my hair close on the sides, and it is hard to find a barber to cut the "fiftys" style. I tried many, in several different towns before finding the one I go to now. I drive about 35 miles, but get my hair cut the way I want. The best part is he is a young fella (mid 30s) so I think he will outlast me.

costs 15.00 here in Winterset Iowa. In the 1950's Uncle George used to cut it for 50 cents. There were 2 barbers in town. His competitor was cross eyed, you could tell which barber guys went to-- competition always had the side burns higher on 1 side.

I used to go to a barber I liked.

Then about ten years ago, one of my wife's girlfriends who works in a beauty shop started doing men's hair so I gravitated to her. She does a good job for $10.

My oldest brother is a barber. He cut my hair for a lot of years. He only does it by appointment though, and there've been times when he was going through any one of his five divorces that he wasn't real reliable when it came to being open. My next older brother's best friend's younger brother opened a shop 20 years or so ago,so when I wanted it done right now,not at somebody else's convenience,I went to him. Been going to him every since. He's only open four days a week, but he's walk in only, and reliable.

My barber is 68. When he retires, I'm shaving whats left off my head. There are no more good barbers. No offense to anyone, but I haven't found a lady yet that can cut a mans hair the old style. Not all old men barbers are good either. Before I found this guy I went to one of the more popular "old man" barbershops in town. The 70's looking barber was giving a military style cut to a little kid, then he started giving one to a young man, same style. All the while excusing himself every 5 mins or so to go out back. I thought maybe he had a bathroom issue. After waiting too long I left. The next barber I found said "Oh him?" "he's a drunk and has to keep stopping to get a drink to keep from shaking". Dodged a bullet on that one!

I havent had a 'store bought' hair cut in years. My wife has cut it since we were married..She also cut our son's hair till he
left for the Navy. My mother in law 'took over'/assumed Hair cutting duties as soon as Susan were engaged, then turned it over to
Susan.LOL BTW,Susan hasn't had a professional 'hairdo' since our wedding. Her mother cut it for years, now her sister cuts it.My
inlaws were very frugal, sometimes to a fault! LOL.

I have not had a haircut since 1990. What I saved on haircuts I spent on conditioner. I have never left the house without a braid or had it blow around. Otherwise I would specify " High and Tight" like the old days..

Just got one , old school little shop in town . Mostly women , cut the way you want and
hot shave on the neck with straight razor , 10 bucks.

I was used to military hair cuts, so about 15 yrs ago I bought a good set of clippers. still use them today.

fortuantely I'm still able to see the same barber in town after 31 yrs. He retired from his real job and just cuts for extra $$ for him and the Mrs. $8.50 now

Never have had a barber worth being loyal to. Wish I could find one tho. Back when I was a kid Arlo was
the town barber, charged $3.00, but if you wanted a decent cut you had to show up before lunch as he
took his lunches at the bar across the street. His afternoon cuts were unreliable. Lol, when he retired
the guy that took over went to $5.00 and my dad thought that was rediculous, but you did get the same
cut in the afternoon you got in the morning.

I like my hair a bit on the long side. I had a meeting with some other defense contractors an some Army folks at Ft Knox a few years back.
During lunch break I was talking to a young Captain that I knew from phone conversation but hadn't met in person before that day. We were
talking about family and he mentioned his wife cut hair at their home just a couple blocks from where we sat. He said "She could cut yours if
you want" I tell him I didn't think I wanted an Army cut, to which he replied "Oh, that's okay, she cuts women's hair all the time". As soon as he
said it he realized what he'd said and got this horrified look. I had to laugh. Didn't get my hair cut that day, though.

In the summer, while at the farm, I go to my grade school best friend, he is a real barber, lather and straight razor on back of neck, 3 minute neck and shoulder massage, and sweet smelling ointments at the end. $12.00. In the winter, I go to 3 gals who opened a new shop in town. They do a fairly good job, can,t have a barber pole out front tho as they are not barber college trained. $15.00

My oldest brother is the kind of barber most of you guys are looking for. He will be 70 in a month
and is still cutting hair 5 days a week. Only barber I have ever been to. I cut my three boys hair,
that is what they have left. And I have cut my wife's hair too. Very few of the old style barber
shops like Flloyd the barber from Mayberry, but that is what my brother shop is like.

Been going to the same lady for 15 years, does a great job in and out about 10 mins. Charges $17 but worth every penny. Just found out she has the BIG C. Now I tip her about the same amount as the hair cut. She has a young son, my way of helping out a bit

Haircut and eyebrows cut every two months. Do the mustache myself. 16.00 cut and 10.00. have had girl barbers since the seventy's. I remember when growing up my dad took me and five bros to the barber at beginning of summer for a crew cut and it grew back in for start of school in sept.

I like fish on wall! lol.

(quoted from post at 09:26:40 03/25/16) What? Now people are naming their T shirts?
If I realized that skull T-shirt was named Destiny I'd have done a Ray Stevens right through the wall!

I went to the same barber for 30 years in the town I worked in which is 40 miles from home. Last year my employer informed me that after 44
years of employment he no longer needed my services. Something about being on a medical leave for a year I think. Since I wasn't going to
drive 40 miles for a hair cut I needed to find a barber closer to home. Found one In the neighborhood. Charges $12.00 plus I give him a $3.00
tip. Does a good job.

Same here, wife's been cutting mine since we were married. The last professional haircut was ridiculous, way short around the temple and ears. Get this--- my mid 40's year old son cuts his own hair and you'd never guess it, looks good! I don't know how he does the bottom back part.

I got my hair cut two days ago at my usual
place.
I actually thought about making a post about
this.
They have 3 chairs there and usually 2
barbers but have another guy that comes in
on call if the shop is buisy. I got the on
call guy this time and he hasn't cut my hair
before. He was ready as soon as I walked in
and motioned me to the chair.
So he asked me how I wanted it cut, how
short, etc.
But heck, I never know what to tell them.
So there is a fellow about my age sitting in
the next chair that was almost done and his
hair looked just about right so I told the
Barber to cut it just like his.
My barber, the other customer and his Barber
all heard what I said and none of them
thought anything of it.
Then I got to thinking if we had all been
women and one gal told the hair dresser to
cut her hair just like the other lady's.
What a ruckus there would have been and
maybe some disgust and and a lot of advice
and discussion about it all. And I realized
how lucky I am to be a man and how much
easier it is to get a simple haircut.
He gave me my haircut then trimmed my
eyebrows and clipped the stray hairs growing
out of my earlobes. Then I paid him and gave
him the usual 10% tip.
20 minutes start to finish and I was out the
door with no hurt feelings for anyone
involved.

We have a place that charges $5 for mens hair cuts. Normally not a long wait time. Normally get a lady. Tell her a #4 on head and #8 on face and dont waste your time chasing them stay ones on top, just buzz them off. They charge another 3-5 for the face. I tip any where from 5 to 7. Only need to go 2-3 times a year as grows slow.

I'm also one that hasn't been to a barber in years. I just cut mine a couple of days ago to get the winter foliage off. I used to spend $8 every 2 weeks. It's been 25 years so I figure I've saved at least $5000.
There's an older guy in the community that still cuts hair 4 days a week from 8-4pm. Unless he decides to go fishing or hunting.

Bottom back part for home done haircut? I just use the old Bic, reach back toward ear lobe and drag across at angle, then reverse. Gets a fairly even back trim, most of neck as well. couple down strokes in back to finish, couple strokes from just in front of ear up and around toward back and a couple top center to rear- once or twice a month in shower, done with hair. Scrape checks, slide once across lower lip and cheeks done. Scissors gets end of 'stash and bottom of beard, stray long hair maybe once a month. Last barbershop visit was about June 1971. Some of the $1.99 hair trimmers using 3 disposable blades work OK, had one for couple years in travel kit but disposable Bic was also in bag, got used to using it, saved space in saddlebag. RN

My only form of vanity!LOL!I've gone to the same girl for about 15 or more yrs.I don't like myself with short hair, and my hair is very thick and it seems not anyone could cut it to please me.I think she charges $14,but I tip.Unfortunately I have retired and it is now out of my way to go to her, where as I used to go past on my way to work.Mark

I was just in the barber's chair this morning. The place I go to is a one man operation that has
been going for a little over ten years now. He's a middle aged guy, something around 50, and is
always friendly and talkative with customers. My #2-3 fade buzz cut takes him about 15 minutes
including an eyebrow trim and I've always been pleased. He seems to have good business and I'm
hoping he'll stick around for years to come.

It is interesting hearing guys talk about barbers using straight razors; my barber told me that he
is not allowed to use them on account of the health codes. Must be a state-by-state thing.

So, while we are talking about haircuts, did you know..........

How the Mohawk haircut was invented???

The poor guy was just trying to get his sideburns even!!!

Where I go to get my hair cut, costs $30.00. The ladies that cut your hair are topless. It's
kinda fun and they do carry on a good conversation. Plus, the haircut is pretty good.

I get my haircut at a shop simply called Haircuts for Men and Boys. Mother/ daughter operation. The best part is they are open 7 days a week. $13.00

Since I got out of the navy in Dec. 71 I have cut my own hair. Just cut the parts that are getting
too long, a little looking and trimming from time to time is all. Probably saved enough to buy a
tractor.

I used to get my haircut at some beauty salon that was kind of in an alley. I needed a haircut fast for something, it was a Saturday and haircut places were closed, they were open so I popped in and asked. They said yes. Had most chairs full of women, but sat me down. They washed my hair, dried it, and as I looked around the women in the chairs were drinking tall boy beers. I asked, they opened the fridge to various tall boy beers, and I made mine Budweiser, both of them. They cut my hair and then I staggered out to my truck and drove home. Until I moved, that place did my hair for years.
