two bottom plow troubles

The other day I tried using this implement in a small field for gardening.
I thought it would be pretty self explanatory but I hadn't used one before.
The trouble is as we plow the grass and sod keeps collecting in the plow and then you have a
whole bunch of debris at the end of the row.
There is a round cutting wheel at the back of one of the plows.
Is this older implement missing something?

there should be 2 cutters 1 in front of each plow bottom. google a picture of your brand of plow and see if you can find a picture of it. If you are missing 1, cutters are easy to find.

Ok that sounds good, at this time other then the plows them self, there isn't
anything ahead of them.
My plow is old, are parts still available?

The "cutters are called coulters. They are mounted to slice in front of the moldboards so the slicing cuts the plant residue and allows it to be buried. If it has none, and if you need to get it done, using a disk harrow on the surface to chop the stems into short pieces will make a job out of it. Many people plow without coulters, but do it on crops with no stringy plug prone trash. Jim

We use a plow from the early 30's. Parts are sometimes available on craigslist, ebay or from older farm equipment dealers. There is a guy in Republic , Ohio that advertises plows on this website, usually in the photo ads. He may have some coulters as he deals iin all kinds of old plows.I have gotten [parts from all the above sites. It just takes time to do a thorough search. Find as many numbers as you can on the plow to assist those helping you.

You may be able to retro-fit coulters from another brand of plow, they are all pretty much the same. Do a little research on the internet, there are probably diagrams for optimum placement of the coulters. Basically, they want to run almost as deep as the plowshare, and right in front of the vertical cutting edge of the share.

I dont use coultrs. I plow 'sod' and hay fields frequently. Never have plugging problems.IS the grass tall/uncut? that is your problem, not lack of coulters.

Do you have it shined up yet or are the bottoms still rusty? If you don't have it shined up,yes,it's just going to drag things instead of turning the ground like it should.

like rrlund said, important to get the rust off of the moldboard, even if you have to use a right angle grinder with a wire wheel.plowing a small garden may not be enough use to scour the plows.get the rust off first.
