We spent a couple of night in a hotel this weekend. My wife use to make a big deal about turning in the little plastic key cards. She would ask for mine, or look in the car and turn em all in.

Other day I saw her running her key card through the shredder.

Said she hear where it has all your credit card, address, phone, etc on it and anyone could scan it and get it all

I am sure the clerks behind the counter have it all as well.

And this entire hotel was manned by some very suntanned folks. Very comforting.

The key machine at 99% of hotels is not connected to their point of sale / reservation system. Two reasons for this 1. there is no need to have this interconnectivity. 2. It would be very expensive to retrofit older hotels to the new key cards if the system had to be compatible with the existing POS / Reservation system.
If you watch them program your keys they usually have to insert their "master" key first then after they remove that card they insert your keys and program them for the correct room number and number of days. If you were to try and overstay (from your departure date given at check-in) you will find your key card no longer works even if you are still paying for the room. If it was tied to their POS /Reservation system you would never have the need to get the card reprogrammed as the system would know you extended your stay.
I believe the confusion came about years ago when it was discussed that since the cards magnetic strips were exactly like a credit card magnetic strip, the cards could be programmed with credit card information and used in stores. That was one of the reasons they ask to see the card when you are making a purchase.
There is no need to destroy the key cards from the hotel in fact if you don't return the card you are stealing and by destroying the card you are technically destroying evidence of that theft which is also against the law. If you are concerned about the information on the card you could carry a strong magnet or a bulk tape eraser to clear the data, it is just a short segment of recording tape after all. Then give them back to the hotel erased believe me they would rather have them back erased than not at all. While not expensive they do add up.

This is really not a scam, but I was really surprised at what happened last weekend at a motel in central Pa. when I told the person behind the desk that the price was too high and I didn't want to stay there, I was told I could get a discount. When I asked how much, he told me $40.00 less. I said okay and went to pay in cash. He told me if I paid cash, I'd have to put up another $50.00 deposit. I would get it back in the morning if everything was okay. I did just that and did get my $50. back in the morning. I never knew you had to pay a deposit for paying good old cash.

Well it makes a bit of sense. If you pay by credit card and you damage the room or take a towel they can charge your card for the cost. If you pay by cash once you are gone they have to work a lot harder to recover the cost.
No damage or stolen items = refund of deposit.

This was in St. Louis. If the St. Louis coppers have time to come track me down, I guess I will just stick out my hands and say, "Ya got me copper"

I think they have their hands full of 2-3 murders a night, 25-30 shootings, dozens of car thefts, armed robbery, rape, home invasion.

Not to mention the white collar crime/theft/embezzlement from city and governement officials.

I think I'll sleep OK knowing I got away with the Great Key Card Caper. :D

You are a racist waste of skin.

I read an article about motel theft and it opened my eyes. The TV is stolen often but on occasion, motel owners have found the room's couch stuck in the door when the thieves got it wedged trying to steal it. Beds disappear too along with lamps and anything else that isn't bolted down.

There are serious security issues with many hotel key card systems, but having your credit card information stolen isn't one of them. And if the hotel staff wanted to steal your credit card number and code, they'd do it when you hand them your actual card.

As for whether or not to turn in your cards when you check out, it's not a big deal for the hotel one way or another. The whole point of using cards rather than keys is that someone can't use a lost key to get into a guest room. The cost of unreturned cards isn't a big expense for the hotel.

Several years ago my wife and two of my sons visited family in St Augustine, Fla.

For some reason, folks of the female persuasion seem to like my third son. (Don't know where that came from as I don't have a whole lot of trouble with that!)

Anyhow, the young gal at the desk struck up a friendship with him to the point he was annoyed, he would have to visit with her every time he came or went during her day shift, so one afternoon he came in one of the side doors and took the stairs upstairs to their room.

His key card didn't work, but Mom and his little bro were there and let him in.

Later, he wandered downstairs and asked the gal at the desk why the key card didn't work.

She laughed and grinned and smiled and did whatever girls do and told him "I was watching on a security camera and saw you come in the other door and I shut our key off so you would have to come and see me".

Grrrls can be evil!

Your air! How do you figure it is your air? The air is free for anyone to breathe, there are no restrictions.

The racism displayed on this site is deplorable. It is very carefully espoused but it is there. No one comes right out with it but it is implied frequently.
