Recommendations on a tractor

I'm sure this is similar to asking a motor head what's better, ford or Chevy...it's ford by the way ;-)

But I'm needing a good model tractor, minimum 60hp diesel. If it's 4x4, then a 40hp will do. Open station is optimal, or less than 9' tall from ground to top of cab/stack and horizontal is best. Ground clearance isn't an issue. It'll be used in seasonal high tunnels and pulling a plasticulture attachment. Could any of you recommend a good tractor model? It can be anything from ford/new holland, case, IH, ect.

Thank you

I have a John Deere 4700 Hydro. Its 48 HP with 4x4. Works very well. Last I checked a used 4700, 4710, 4720 with loader is a round $18000 give or take.

Seems tome that any tractor that size will be a import, no matter what colour. Take a
look at the Kubota offerings , I have two bigger tractors , but I think the size you
are looking for are very price competitive. Gaining quite a bit of market share around
here.

This type of question gets asked frequently
here. And the questioner always forgets to
add one very important piece of information.
How much do you have to spend on this
tractor? That bit of info will go a long way
in helping the fellows here determine what
is a good choice for you.

I have a TC48DA new holland that I use for the plastic layer and tiller in the high tunnels. It is very handy and was
priced very reasonably.

UD got part of it. New? Used? Price range? And another important factor, dealer support in your area! Several posters mention Oliver and one AC. Well here that's worthless because it's 60 miles to the closest supporting dealer who never has any parts on hand for anything over 5 years old. He figures if you are really in a pinch you'll buy a new piece of equipment rather than waiting. Other areas have great dealers.

Other than JD and Kubota, we haven't had a dealer for any other brand within a hundred miles for the past 20 years. I've found many who are very good about phone or on-line parts ordering. They get stuff out the same day (or have it drop-shipped to you directly from the warehouse), and are good about shipping it the least expensive way. You just need a parts book, and you're good to go.

We have 2 dealers here locally. One is a JD house and the other is a newly opened Mahindra about 30 miles away.

I was asking here for ideas on the old work horses. I don't need the bells and whistles of the new computerized tractors when I could find a ford 4/5000 to do the job. Or even a little case. Something that will take some abuse, has real metal and will keep running. My price range varies by condition of tractor but I'm willing to go to $10,000. That's why I asked, so I could start looking on CL, or the tractor auction site. If I could find a good running tractor with some life still in it for $3-5,000 it would be great.

Here's a good buy, if it was a little closer it would be mine. This is a setup used for veggies...tall spindles, large rear tires.

IMO that leaves 2 brands. I think Ford has batter parts support and any New Holland or Case IH dealer can get them plus there are ton available right here from the host of this site. That's not saying the MF is a bad tractor it isn't. But I've been told, and hopefully someone will correct me if I wrong some MF parts on old units are getting a little hard to find. Mostly steering, as in PS pumps and gear box parts from what I was told. Location will determine price. Here a MF wont be as expensive as say a Ford 5000. Just not as desirable here. Here you can find things like this http://fargo.craigslist.org/grq/5479358303.html or this http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/hnp/grd/5500449153.html
or this http://wausau.craigslist.org/grd/5458722138.html all found on CL with a ten minute search.

HOpe you find what you need.

I like the 50-55 series of Deere. Plenty of iron with minimal electronics. Our 2155 is like a rock. With 4600 hours we have replaced 3 spindles
( swept back axle with loader and plenty of ground hog holes) batteries , water pump and starter selinoid. I am thinking you may need a 23-
2555 for what you may want to use it for.
