Tractor Photo from 1971

Going through some old photos tonight and found one of my favourites. My dad on the Cockshutt 40 stuck with the mower cutting slough hay. Got the 50 ready to hook up and pull. That same area today would be half way up the tractor wheels in water.

(quoted from post at 21:09:15 03/20/16) Nice pic, but what's slouth hay? Never heard that term, is it mulch hay no good for feeding?
Slough hay, the wild grass that grows in sloughs. If you are short of hay it is better than nothing and its free. Used to be one way of getting something out of the low wet lands. Back before they were flooded all year round. Take a look at this country on google earth some time and you will see what I'm talking about. Up to half the acres on a quarter section have been under water lately.

My late mother , who would be 100 this year , told me that when she was 16 , back in 1932 , there were no sloughs , and their dugout dried up too. The only place that they might get any crop was where the sloughs had been. For many years into the 40's they cropped slough ground. Now it is like your picture, water every where. I sure like the looks of your Cockshutt tractors.

I agree with Bruce. Great looking tractors. Goodyear sure did make a lot of those tires. They lasted really well, but I didn't like the way they pulled.

I have noticed that many places that were tillable when I was kid are now too wet. I believe that a large part of it are laws that regulate wet lands work. Where you used to be able to go in and open up swales, ditches and water ways that had partly filled in over the years, now you have to get congress to pass legislation. You could be waiting for a dry year to get into a swale, then a cat tail shows up and you are done.

Slough grass is prairie cordgrass some times called ripgut"because it has sharp leaf edges but cows did not seem to mind because our cattle in W Iowa ate it as hay. Very finely serrated leaf edges.

rusty6,

It's a great photo!

Being that it's older and not quite as clear... it makes it look like a painting. I think I'd frame that one.

That picture belongs on a calendar somewhere and/or a post card.

Beautiful!!!!!

Thanks for sharing.

Lyndon- send us some of that moisture down south. Our sloughs are pretty dry around Stavely. Lots of alkali. I see my neighbors have recently worked up some slough bottoms that I don't remember ever being dry.unc

Thanks Bill. I was actually a bit disappointed that I cut off the front tractor wheel at the right. Got in too much of a hurry I guess. This was a 110 slide from a little Kodak Instamatic camera. I scanned it, and a few others including this one of the 50 in it's "winter clothes" pushing a bit of snow.

Sure wish I could, especially right now. We're dead slow right now, too wet to get into most yards to load, and with it snowing again, sounds like I'm sidelined for the week.
