I prefer to call it earth covering. In that place it is pretty sandy on top but is hard like the rock it is just underneath. The poor tractors in the tractor pull don't have nice dirt for traction like back east. They had it wet down but very little digging in. I have some videos for passing along when I get them put someplace.
 
Yes it is, a 1948 saved from a scrap pile in ND. The saver is from Mayville. Can't read his name for sure but Thadeus Thayville could be it.
