What gender of cat is the best mouser?

The original subject was "Re: What gender of cat is the best mouser?".

There is evidence that second generation anticoagulant rodent poisons are killing raptors and may kill other birds. It accumulates in their systems. So if you use them try to use the poisons where you can find the bodies and dispose of them where they cannot be eaten by mammals or birds. I am not sure of how fast or if these biodegrade so I will have to research.

Because we do have good mouser (and birder), she's a fixed female, we don't use any rat poisons. She likes to eat what she catches and we don't want to poison her.

We have had a lot of cats over the years. They all hunt like crazy. Best ever would be a big neutered tomcat we took in several years ago. I have seen him run across a wood wall chasing a chipmunk...and he caught him.

Hard to find a good mouser of either gender. I swear my dog we have now caught more stuff than any cats we ever had. But she is getting old and doesn't seem to bother anymore.

When I grew up on a small farm in the 60's we had lots of cats. Best hunting cat was a female with kittens. Cat would hunt mice to teach the kittens. Worst deal for the mouse as the kittens would just play it to death before trying to eat it. Worst cat was an unfixed male cat. They are as lazy as lazy gets.

Momma cats tend to be more consistent mousers, but a whole lot of toms are very good at it too.

We had a husky Tom cat that rarely showed up at the food bowl, he had a route around the pasture, he would sit and wait for stripped gophers (ground squirrels) to pop out of their holes. You knew he had a good day hunting when he brought one home, and yes Tom cats will sometimes bring something home to feed others.

Had a black Tom cat that would bring me stuff and lay it at my feet, not always dead. I learned not to pet him in the dark when I would get home at 1:00 in the morning, but I'll just leave it at that. Yeash........

House cat is a neutered male, he will catch stuff that creeps into the basement, with no formal training he still loves the hunt. We also don't see any spiders in the basement any more.

Depends more on the cat than which it is.

Must just depend on the cat. There's a black and white tom that I see with something in his mouth frequently. We put food out for them, but it's the cheap kind and not so much that they don't want to supplement their diet.

There is no rhyme or reason as to the best feline hunters. There is a black non-neutered Tom around and only once in several years did he show up on the patio looking for a handout. The momma cat here is also very good about hunting even though her kitten bearing days are long past. The white Tonk mix female is not much of a mouser but does live up to the reputation of being well adapted for living indoors when being outside is not possible or dangerous.

Overall, I think our mama cats with kittens are the best mousers. I don't always see what they caught, but they have more mouths to feed, so their catches disappear fast.

The breed that is now called American short-hair was originally bred in England as a rat killer to live on sailing ships. They have circular rings around their neck and on the sides. They are very powerful and mostly want to stay outside, does not make a good indoor cat.

A hungry one works the best. If you feed a cat nothing but cat-food from the store it want never be a good mouser. I'm not saying don't feed it but just dont feed it alot. Thats speaking from experience.

Pulled into a drive through drug store drop off told him the girlfriend needed more rat bait he about fell over laughing.
By the way warfin in stands for Wisconsin alumni research foundation Inc .

My experience indicates that female cats are far better mousers. This is particularly true if the Tom is neutered. Feeding cats has no effect on their mousing unless you overfeed them and make them fat and lazy.

I do not know if gender makes a difference, but have had a couple really good neutered Tom's that really can hunt.

Just depends, we had good both in male or female. We had a stray male cat for a while that was a maniac. You get pet him 3 times then her would shred your had and then want to be loved again. One day he killed a mink and brought it up to the house.
