I am working on the hydraulics on my little D-2 Caterpillar. Mennonites near here have a huge salvage yard/repair and parts facility for all things on tracks. I had a cracked flange on the hydraulic tank, someone had completely eliminated the internal filter and it's mountings, and I got a new filter from them.

Fella spent a good half hour helping me, two trips down to the salvage area to remove parts. I got the replacement flange, the entire gizmo that holds the filter, and a new "string" filter for $40.

They are the place to go. And they know their stuff, and have all the old original parts books.

For some of these old guys, using their knowledge of the old stuff to help people is their reason for being. I went into a JD dealership many years ago, looking for a bottom chain for an old JD manure spreader. Old parts guy (Herb) said "I think we have one of those upstairs", and dispatched a youngster up to get it. Down he came, with a complete unit, with more spider webs than I had ever seen in one place in my life. Tag on it said $84.00. Younger parts guy said "I think there's a price adjustment on that". Herb gave him "the look" and said "So, you're thinking should keep it upstairs for another 40 years?" Other guy walked away and said "Never mind", and I got it for $84.

So was it the place on Hwy 5 north of Versailles?? Coming form your way it would be on the right hand side. Could well have been one of his sons since it has been at least 10 years since I was up there to buy stuff. Last name is Zimmerman
