12 volt conversion

I put an alternator on my Ford 600 to give me 12 volts, can I put a resistor in the wire to the headlights and keep my old 6 volt lights?

You could rewire lights in pairs in series but seems like a lot of trouble to go through. Either replace 6 volt bulbs with 12 volt bulbs, or better yet for a few bucks more you could replace fixtuers with new high efficient brighter lamps. Hear the new LEDs are wonderful.

You said it nicer than I did, sorry.

The higher voltage bulbs have a built in higher resistance that will keep the wattage about the same. it is very inefficient to drop voltage with a resistor, and the voltage will change as the load changes, so if one bulb burns out, the voltage will be higher on the others, much easier to just change them.

You could use a solid state 7806 regulator for small loads, generally less than 1 amp.

I agree with the idea of changing to 12V LED bulbs. Very low current draw, should last a lifetime and prices are getting better all the time.

You could, but that would take a bit of measurement and calculation to arrive at the correct resistance value. Then, the resistor would be large, hard to find, probably expensive, and would generate quite a bit of heat.
So, why make it difficult and overcomplicated and potentially create more problems than you solve???
Simply change the bulbs to 12 volt bulbs and the problem is solved with no calculations, no quest to locate the right parts, and no problems.
