SHIPPING COSTS

Does anyone have any experience calling YT for alternate shipping methods? I need a sediment bowl gasket. It's cost is $2.95. The shipping is $11.95. That's just crazy. Just put it in an envelope and ship it out. Flat rate boxes are $5.00. I have done this for small gun parts before. I even have a few other small parts that I need that could also fit into a small flat rate box. Thanks, John.

Go to a hardware store and buy a piece of gasket material that will tolerate fuel. Use your bowl for a diaghram. Take a very sharp cutting tool and cut it out. probably wont cost a dollar.

If you can find a farm store that carries A&I Products they carry them, about the same cost you mentioned. A TSC store might have them also. You may find one "reasonable" at a dealership as well.

Bought an out of production IH Caution/Warning decal (NLA, no longer made and no reproductions available) for an IH McCormick restoration on an implement and found one still available at Vintage Parts in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. Could only be ordered through a participating CaseIH dealership and only shipped directly to the dealer. The dealership is an 85 mile one way trip so had it shipped to me instead of making the drive to pick it up there having already incurred the cost of getting it to the dealership. The decal cost $1.92 and total costs for shipping by Vintage Parts to the dealer and on to me was $16.87. This decal could have easily fit in a small letter size envelope but it seems these outfits want UPS/FedEx to do the pick-up and deliveries whereas the Postal Service could have easily handled it for less then a $1 being nothing more then a normal letter. Shipping costs have certainly gotten out of hand and businesses for the most part have no interest in trying to minimize shipping expenses to their customers and will only use the high cost shipping services to handle their shipments.

Go to NAPA or other parts place & get a sheet of heavy cork. Cut your own as I do. That sheet will make gaskets for pennies.

Trace it with a pen and cut it out with a pair of scissors. Inside can be cut with a utility knife as it doesn't have to be as accurate. In a pinch I have used an inner tube.

I tried to get YT to mail me a sediment bowl gasket - 47 cents, they refused and wanted to ship the other way for many dollars. I told them to pack sand.

I too am a little annoyed at the shipping charges for small items that would fit in an envelope or small box. I too have cancelled a buy because I thought the shipping was too much. But of course some times you just have to bite the bullet and throw money at your problem. gobble

Not at my local TSC store. Something like a sediment bowl gasket would be a special order. Now if you need something horse related it's stacked to the roof.

Shipping costs are not just postage!! They have tape, bubble wrap time invested. What if they have to drive to post office? What if they are set up to ship UPS and need to shut the line down or pull some one to do special order???

Probably not gonna help you on something that new, but -
I had a similar situation with a guy who sells parts for pre 1939 tractors (Rice Equipment). I forget what the part was, but it was only $2.00, and shipping was gonna be $11.95. He said he'd put it in an envelope and mail it . He never even charged me the $2.00! I mailed him a $5 when I got the part, and we both were happy.

YT is a business. Business is for making money. Figure the time spent walking out to the shelf, finding the part, putting in a baggie (bought the baggie), walk to the counter, pack in a box (bought boxes, padding) process the shipment, apply label, walk to the car, drive to the shipping place, drop off, drive back to the shop... You've got an hour processing a $2 item. Would anyone work for $2 an hour?
Time is money!

(quoted from post at 10:17:15 03/10/16) NAPA sells the correct gaskets. Just hard to find a person who can look it up.

Napa numbers are 730-9506 for the 2" OD gasket and 730-9510 for the 2 1/8" OD gasket. They can be found if you do a search for "Fuel Bowl Strainer". That search will return a number of items in addition to the gaskets.

I just received 3 o-rings i ordered for a 12 gauge shotgun. came i a flat plastic envelope 1"x 2". This was put in a box 6'x 10" x 2" with packing material. It would have fit in a small envelope. Thank god it was free shipping!
