For you guys who worry about scrap prices....

Some say it's just short-term. Two local scrapyards that were in business for decades have recently closed up for good. One of the owners said that with the demise of industry in the area and the abandoned sites now just about cleaned up, and all the farm scrap cleaned up, there isn't enough supply for him to cover his property taxes and payroll.

I only have a couple hundred ton but we went from $215 to $70 here and I just cannot sell for $70. Sure hope it gets back up or I may die and leave mine to the grandkids.

Talked to RMI in grand forks ND today and the told me 40.00 a ton for prepared and 20 a ton for unprepared

Hi Elton Back in the late 90's early 2000 the price went bad in the U.K and you had to pay the scrap guys to take stuff. My friend was in the business for a few $ cash. when he wasn't getting cash he stopped shipping. He had stuff all over the home yard. His girlfriend got pretty annoyed with him. I went round there one day. she was so mad she said if he don't clean up I'm going to put pieces in small boxes gift wrap it and give it to everybody that calls. she was a pure fire breathing Irish lady. a week later that yard was spotless Jimmy couldn't bare the thought of not getting anything for his scrap. Maybe you could gift wrap yours and give it to visitors L.O.L

I'm kinda thinking you are in the same boat as our local yard. He didn't like the prices 3 years ago so didn't ship it all in then. At the good prices like that his Dad would empty the yard . Then sweep the shop floor with a magnet to make sure he got everything he could sell. he's now completly full and probably loosing 200 plus a ton shipping as he has to move it pay the bills. They got 6 guys loads of equipment and electric and other bills to pay. The yard man thinks another bad year like this and they are done.
Regards Robert

My bother-in-law has an auto salvage yard and his own crusher. Told me he turned down $280 hoping for $300 when it went south. Has 1000 cars crushed and piled up and probably that many more sitting on the yard.

Hi Elton Oh well i guess he learned that greed can kick you square in the head just like a horse can. I bet he won't play that game again for a while L.O.L. I think round here in Canada right now cars are about $40 a ton and heavy is worth 50-$60 depending on the yard. of course the "good" paying yards 20 miles further up the road. I used to take 3/4 ton loads from my shop scrap, but now the real light stuff goes to the town dump. the heavy will still go to the scrap yard but i'll take it in with the tractor and gravel trailer i'm building when it's done. That way I can save some money moving a bigger load, when i clear the junk/tractors that need to be out of here now.
Regards Robert
