WOW tractor was well used with loader clearing camps lots at a lake (rough translation lots of hard wear) Engine had failed, not sure what was wrong but blown, non running, Located at a lake long ways away all for north of $2000. Pondering if I should let this incredible opportunity pass???

run Forest run!!!!! Rough running JD 420s will hardly bring $2000 let along one with a bad motor. You are better of the by a restored one as it will cost less than doing one yourself. You an buy sharp ones for $3000-4000.

I don't think I would pay more than $500 for it. A few years back I rebuilt the motor in mine. Had to grind the crank, and a complete engine overhaul. The machinist bill for grinding the crank, sleeves, pistons, rings, bearings and gasket set was around $1700. With labor and everything else, I had around $2800-$2900 in the motor. JD is right. Don't even think about it for that kind of price. If you absolutely have to have a 420, buy a restored one. They are not that much more. If you are looking for a light handy tractor (with the emphasis on LIGHT) the 420 is okay, but there are a lot of others in that size range that are much better tractors and no more money than this clown is asking.

I had one for several years. I always banged my knee getting on and off it, until I learned to mount like getting on a horse (left foot on left footplate, swing right leg up and over the seat and steering wheel). I did like mine, but I also think you need to be well south of a grand for one as described.

depends on which chassis if they are easy to mount and dismount.

Engine shot. Steering shot. Tranny and Tom probably not far behind. If he gave it to you you would have a hard time coming out ahead. JMO

I bought a running JD-420T with good tires for $1300 and used it without any repairs for about 6 years and sold it for $1500. They are a fairly powerful little tractor that are very useful on the ranch for mowing, light grading, raking, etc. Problem areas are steering worm gear, leaking rocker arms, fouled plugs, etc. There is no way I would pay any more than 750-1000 dollars unless it had new tires and perfect tin. If the engine is shot, it is likely the hydraulics, cooling, clutch, etc are in need of repair and that can be big dollars. I just bought a 1955 John Deere 60 with three point, roll-a-matic, fenders, live pto, tachometer, perfect tin and seat, power steering, working lights, average tires for $2000. Starts and drives like new and all I did was change all the fluids. Won't find many 60s in that shape and with those options for that price but they are out there, you just have to be looking and a bit lucky.
