Spring ritual I guess, any of you do it? Or take the kids grand kids? I will say its died out a lot from years back. (probably have a computer game for it now)!!! Used to be competition and even clubs. About all you can get locally is the cheap kiddy ones. Any boxed kites flown up to 1000 feet? Any fighting kites Well chime in.

All the windmills they're putting up I can just see a kite breaking loose and getting wound up in one of those huge propellors. I have neat one that looks like a bi-plane hanging in the garage where it's been for years.

Seen them in power lines and may be caused power outage but not in windmills. Give it time.

Use to have a box kite in the house, and one that looks like a stelth bomber. If you like kites come out to Two Rivers, WI on Labor day Weekend for Kites over Lake Michigan.
Kites

I have had several kite eating trees years ago like Peanuts comic.lol Used to make all kinds and sizes, even tied them out and let them fly for 2 or 3 days straight.

No kites here, but in Austin, TX, an hour away, today is the kite festival. Huge park in downtown Austin will be filled with folks flying kites.

I made box kites as a teenager. I built one about 6' tall. I was determined to launch my little sister. She held on and bounced around....if the winds had been higher she would have been gone😅

I also welded a hang glider up out of 1"tubing. I heat sealed black poly from the silage pit onto it. Then hauled myself and it up to the back top of the silage pile. I ran toward the edge we had been feading from....a nice square drop off. Let's just say that didn't work out but nothing broke except my welds. I got a few bumps from the tubing smacking the back of my head.

Last May for my sons 5th birthday my whole family went to a park by the river and flew kites for the afternoon. We had a bi plane and a big bird and a trick kite. Plus some small basic diamonds like Charlie Brown used to crash in the tree. Everyone had a great time.

I think it's time it took my kids to the barn and build another box kite. Those kites truly can go a thousand feet. Maybe for the Easter weekend. If we do I will post pictures.

Lots of years ago the kids and I had a hang glider type kite with a little man hanging on. One day it broke loose and was headed towards town and gaining altitude when it went out of sight.

Many years ago, I bought a kite with a free winder. I was thinking that with free winder the kite would fly better. Some years later I figured out that it was a winder to wind the string on to. When I told my kids, they thought it was hilarious. I still haven't lived that on down. The kite did fly!

Well yes of course. When the kids were little we would fly them a lot. Problem here was; you could get the sucker in the air about 40' with the wind at your back - next thing you know the wind is in your face. Used to take them to a park/playground that worked better. A pal of mine was/is a total kite nut. He built a 10' box kite that we launched on a beach with a small skiff. Boy Howdy ! did that thing have some lift ! Pulled him out of the boat and into the water (not warm at the time) and I guess the extra weight of the soaked clothes kept him from being lost at sea ! Ahh the memories. ;^)

In SJ down at Wildwood they have a big kite fly every Memorial weekend. There are all kinds of stunt kites and some pretty big and small types. Those stunt kites are almost built to aircraft standards and are very expensive. Couple hundred bucks a pop and hand made.
Many years ago I was pretty heavy into kites and there is a type of kite called a Scott sled. Three ribs and easy to build. very stable flyer. They are ment to be about three feet high and about the same wide with a vent in the center. Now I couldn't just fly the standard size could I ...NOooooo! I built one out of supper thick black polly sheet with three 1/2 inch yellow pcv pipe ribs. Now this puppy was almost SEVEN feet tall. Got her built and flew it with 150 pound test braided line. Made the mistake of a launch into about a 20 mph wind. I was about 135 pounds at the time and YES it dragged me for about 10 feet till I fell on my butt so I could hang on to her. You should have heard the bradded line scream in the wind!. When she climbed up almost straight over head she flew wonderfully. What a beast of a kite. Someday I need to build another!

I had Charlie Brown's luck too, except we didn't have many trees around back in those days. When the kite took a nose dive and crashed into the ground, I gathered up the pieces and quit.

About 25 years ago I was in Clearwater Fl and bought a Parafoil type, nylon kite.

I need to work on the tail a some of it is missing, but otherwise it is ready to go.

If I just was!

years ago when I was high school age we flew those bat wing kites with those big orange eyes.. So I decided to make one out of wood and plastic. Sucker was about 8 feet wide from tip of wing to opposite tip.. made it just like the smaller bat version.. Had to have a pretty good wind to get it up but it flew.. And no you couldnt use regular kite string.. I also had to wear leather gloves when I flew to let out the string and to pull it back in.. Good times.. in a good wind it would try to take you for a ride..
