I figured some of you guys dabble in wood work so maybe I can get some ideas. In the pic you can see the top board missing. Would someone have a pic of what it may have looked like or how I should make it. Got it at a farm auction last year and need to finish it and make a little room in barn. Thanks.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but that is not an old jam cupboard ! Its the top of a not so old china cabinet, the two groves in the shelf's give it away. Their there to hold plates.. no bottom shelf means it sat on a lower chest.. Sorry, but you can put a top and bottom shelf and use it as you wish.

It may not have had a top. It may have been a wall-mounted cabinet right up against the ceiling.

T'was me, I'd lay up a top out of pine that was 1 inch or so longer/wider all the way around and rout a bullnose on it.

I think you are right.......I never even thought of that. I think I will do as Fauteen suggests and put slightly larger top and round it off. There is always someone with a keen eye. Sorry about the positioning of the pics...I took with my phone and they never seem to correct when uploaded. Thanks.

Thats how the tops were. I have seen where people put a board flush with the existing top so they could put stuff on top (figurines, cookie jars, or tractor displays) but I dont think its common. All you do is put a few small pieces of wood 3/4 inch down from the top on the inside and the board is held up by them.

Ever wonder why grandma was always dusting up high when you would sneak into the kitchen looking for cookies or a piece of that hard rock candy grandpa had? Ever wonder why she was surprised when you walked in? I dont know either but that space is enough to hold a bottle of cooking sherry and a small purse of egg money. Just saying...

farmerjohn- Your search for the image to match BrianRBM post was impressive!
