First I have worked on M 40 420 tractors and dozers so I am somewhat up on them. Here is my issues 1. what is a 420 tractor worth with bad engine ballpark? I have not seen it in person nor have I seen any sell lately. 2. Did 420 430 ever have live pto and how did they do it?? I worked on one that did not have live pto years back. Thanks

The John Deere section of this site would be a better place to ask.
There were three distinct versions of the 420.
A 1956 all green straight steer four speed with transmission driven pto.
A 1957 yellow stripe straight steer with optional five speed and optional live pto. iirc later units had optional PS.
The best with an upgraded transmission was the 1958 slant steer yellow stripe. Optional 5 speed, optional live pto optional PS.
Any year of the 420 could have an optional SCV.
Which year and chassis is the unit you are looking at?
What makes the engine "bad" ?

Nobody helped much with value. I recently bought a 1957 420S, with cultivators, been sitting in a barn for 20 yrs., full set of weights. non existent paint, flat tires, for $1000. Metal was straight for the most part. Engine was stuck, of course. It was a 5 speed with live PTO. A few years ago, I sold a restored one for $5800, I think. The man paid in cash and a few years later I saw on the news, he was arrested for embezzelment, hope there was no connection.

Value is hard. I paid $1000 for a non runner a few years ago with new rear tires on it. Figured I could part it and make money. Ended up trading it. I've seen ugly runners under 2k. Just depends on the area. Engine parts for these aren't crazy expensive. Might be worth getting it running. There's a guy in Georgia that has every part you can think of for these vertical 2 cylinders. Farmer John was the name of his business I think. I bought some transmission parts from him. Not the cheapest, but very knowledgeable and won't sell you junk.
