Tractor tire ply question

Have to get some tractor tires for my new to me Ford 4000. The size is 16.9 - 30

When I called the store up I had a choice of BKT which is 8 ply, or Firestone which is 6 ply. I really wanted the made in the US Firestone but was afraid it would be too prone to punctures from stobbs and clearing the land. Mainly used for bushhogging but I do a lot of tree clearing and sometimes run over old cedar trees with hard and sharp limbs.

Am I being too cautious?

From what you say, I would not want anything less than 8 ply. I've got 2 tractors with BKT 8 ply tires on them and they are good tires.

8 ply is far less prone to punctures than 4 or 6 ply, especially after they have been on a year and hardened up. I would not be afraid of either tire.

Thanks everyone that was fast, I will stick with my initial choice then. I get tired of overthinking things but we are talking about $1200 here!

On tractor tires not all ply ratings are
equal. I've seen 6-ply tires thicker than
8-ply many times. So do your homework.
Many cheaper lines of tires are thinner,
even if they have more plies. Buyer beware.

I would agree that a higher ply rating does not necessarily mean a thicker tire. This is why it is called a "ply rating" - it doesn't mean that the tire has X number of actual ply layers. It only indicates the tire's maximum allowed air pressure and thus the load capacity relative to other tires the same size. The tire manufacturer can do other things to make the tire stronger and able to handle higher inflation pressures without necessarily making the tire thicker across the tread area.

My luck with Firestone I will go with any other make I can find. Only Firestone tire I will buy is car-light truck from an auto parts yard.
