630 John Deere Oil Pressure

I bought a 630 John Deere with a new motor in it. Tractor has been sitting for a while in a shop. Took the tractor to a mechanic for a tune up. He got the tractor running good, but it started to leak oil between the governor housing and the crankcase. Gasket was leaking was what the mechanic said was the cause for the leak. The mechanic got sick. Has been sick for over a year. Said he probably wouldn't be able to replace the gasket.

I picked the tractor up and took it to another mechanic. Didn't start the tractor, wenched it on the trailer.

This mechanic replaced the gasket. Now when we start tractor it has very very little oil pressure. Doesn't produce enough pressure to make the needle on the pressure gauge move. We pulled the inspection plate to look in the crankcase. Shaft that drives the oil pump is turning as the engine is running.

What could be wrong that we have no oil pressure.

Engine runs for just a few seconds at a time, so we don't damage it.

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Clogged screen or oil filter, faulty gauge, broken oil line or broken where governor goes?? Pump not turning or damaged. You just got to weed it out.

There is no line that connects from the oil pump to the governor like the A's and G's did. There is a hole that lines up between the crankcase and governor housing. (# 1 in picture shows the fitting that connects the oil line to the crankcase.) Sometimes if too much gasket maker is used or a home made gasket is used it will fill the oil hole and prevent it from getting oil to the governor and out to the pressure gauge. The original gasket around the hole didn't seal is probably why you were having a leak to start with. You might have to take it apart again to check it out.

Oil pressure was fine when I first ran it. Changed oil, changed filter, I know about the hole in the gasket where the two line butt together. Blew out all lines. Put low pressure air to gauge and it works.

MSD hit the nail on the head. A few years ago my 630 suddenly lost pressure. After some head scratching I found a chunk of blue silicone stuck in the fitting coming out of the governor. Take that fitting out and poke something down there. Maybe a drill bit turned by hand.

Two more things, if you have an external line to gauge take it off and see if oil is coming out at all. Than drain oil and see if the screen in bottom is plugged.

You stated that after the new mechanic replaced the gasket it lost it's pressure. I'd still bet the hole his blocked.

Mel don't mean to be a smart A but if you look on page 15-3 and 15-4 you will find the oil line that goes up to top of the crankcase from the oil pump just like the A&Bs

If my mechanic over tightened the oil filter and damaged the filter head how would you know?? How would you repair it.

I have been around these type tractors all my life and I did the oil changes on them. Never had a problem. With that being said a friend of mine who is a sharp guy made the comment about over tightening the oil filter.

Kent, no problem. I should have stated that there is no connection from an oil line to the governor (see figure #10 upper photo) like in an A or G. As you know that fitting connects with the governor and is a direct connection from the oil filter via line # 13 (upper photo). Figures #1 and #2 from my original picture of page 15-2 is listed as an oil indicator line on page 15-3. It does not connect to the governor via any line but through the extra hole in the gasket (# 38 in lower photo) as shown. This is where I think the blockage is and where the original leak started from. I ran across the same thing in a 70 puller we worked on last spring.
