the neighbor where i stashed my fresh heifers last summer until i had enough to milk here, lost his dairy barn last night. passer-by woke them up about 1 am. all that is left standing is the 2 silos and a grain tank. everything else connected to the barn is gone. including his milking herd, maybe 60-70 cows and the young calves tied in the barn. one cow made it out of the barn, singed hair but not burned, and 3 calves in hutches outside the barn survived. those 4 animals are here. the bred heifers in another barn, and his wife's menangerie (pigs, goats, donkeys, etc) survived but were in the prevailing wind/smoke. prayers for paul and karen appreciated.

btw, his 966 and 826 and, i think, the 544 were ok.

dunno where they got the "damages" part- there's nothing left but the shell of the milkhouse and even the calf pails inside it melted if that tells you anything.

A friend of mine in Cornwall CT had a barn fire almost the same time last night, lost many pigs along with other things, scary and devastating indeed

What a horrible tragic thing. Hard to believe that there is a God when you hear about something like this and why he would allow such suffering. But there is a God.

Not only was there the pain and suffering of the cows but he lost his livelihood. Huge tragedy! I pray for t hem. A little over forty years ago a close neighbor lost barn, hog house with a hundred head of hogs and a corn crib. It was a total loss. The hogs were laying like there they were sleeping and the smell was gut wrenching. This happened in the summer. I will never forget it. He had me come over with the .22 to shoot some of the burned hogs that were roaming around. Their ears were burned off with only holes in their heads. Very sad and tragic.

Thats is just one of the worst things that can happen to anyone in life only good thing is no lose of life and barn can be rebuilt just all those little things and memories everything will start getting better for you folks keep a stiff upper lip.

been there and done that, jan. 2003 lost my barn and 14 head of goats, saved 6 kids and 2 does that were burned pretty bad but survived,...my heart goes out to them

Not much to say, that has to be terrible to lose your animals that way.

Prayers for them.

Years back, father-in-law lost his barn and dairy to fire. Burned to the ground. Could see the humps where the carcasses laid in the ashes. Brings tears to my eyes even now thirty years later. I helped milking some of them. Believe the fire was arson, other barns in the area burned in that time frame. Tragic. My heart goes out to the farmer.

We lost ours back in 64. If you can call it lucky,it burned in July. We only lost a few calves. Some others were singed but my brother got them out. I don't remember anymore if all of them that he got out survived or not. Seems like one or two died from being burned too bad.
This was where we milked until well after the first snow before we got in to the new barn.

my heart goes out i been there aswell. its really hard to come back . i almost wish i had gone back to doing auto body work. hopefully he had some insurance.

We lost our barn in "55, the year I graduated from ag college. It was 3 years before I got a barn built. Milked in a neighbor"s barn winters and a setup like that summers.

Oh man, that has got to be tough to deal with. I can't even imagine the sense of loss being felt by that family. Thoughts and prayers from MN.

he is young enough, maybe early-mid 40s. not sure about his thoughts. he has some short-bred heifers left, and we were already boarding 10 4 mo+/- old calves here, 3 more here now that were outside in hutches and unhurt, so there are some genetics still on the ground. 71 cows died, not sure how many little calves.
they are good people.

(quoted from post at 20:18:49 02/16/16) Makes me sad to see animals die like that. Sad for the owners, also.

That is exactly why we don't tie ours up or confine them overnight, and leave at least one way for them to get out of the barn. No way to know how they would act in a fire but at least they have a chance. Tied up and doors shut, no chance.
