Hi, I'm not much of a mechanic so I need to ask for some advice. My combine engine (Gleaner F)will not run, its getting spark to the cylinder and after I stop cranking the engine I have gas come out of the carburetor. So is my float stuck and its getting too much gas? and that's the reason why its not trying to start? appreciate any help any one can give. Probably need to rebuild carburetor? Thanks

Take a look at your plugs. If they're black and fouled your spark will just be shorted out and do nothing.

If you have gas coming out of the carb then yes you have a carb problem. And yes from what you describe a stuck float could be the problem. You could also have a bad needle and seat or something blocking the needle from closing all the way.

Your engine is flooding and there could be a number of reasons. Some of these reasons will be worsened by the cold. Is it cold where you are? Did it run when it was warmer? You may need to rebuild the carb. You may have a vacuum leak or poor compression. You may have an ignition problem. If it has not had work done on it in a while, clean and rebuild the carb. Do a tune-up. Replace the plugs and check the plug wires. Check compression if you still have an issue. Check the air filter and the oil. Is this machine new to you? Have you been trying to fix it? Any chance it got out of time or the wires got switched around? There are guys here who can figure out your problem in a heartbeat. The more information you give them, the better.

If gas only drips from the carb after a failed/choke assist start, that is normal for an updraft carb.

If it drips any time the fuel is on, that is an indication the needle float valve is not sealing completely. This is a common problem with updraft carbs and typically will still run, just have to be careful to turn the gas off when not running.

If gas pours out, that is a serious indication there is a problem. Could be trash in the needle valve, sunk float, float level too high, improper assembly.

Look at the plugs. If they are wet with gas after trying to start, it is flooding. Try less choke, try turning the fuel off while trying to start. If they are black, clean or replace them. Try starting with the air cleaner disconnected, it could be clogged.

If it's been cranked flooded, the cylinders may be washed down with gas. If it's been run flooding, (blowing black smoke) the oil may be gas contaminated. A shot of oil in each cylinder will bring up the compression. An oil change if contaminated will be necessary.

Make sure you have compression, good spark at the plugs while cranking, and proper timing.

How is the cranking speed? If the starter is worn, the battery weak, dirty connections, too small cables, there won't be enough power left for the ignition (unless it's magneto).

Thanks for all the help. From all your advice that I have gathered, the gas situation is ok, now I will make sure the battery is fully charged and I will buy a compression tester to test the cylinders for compression. I wanted to get it started over a month ago to cycle the new antifreeze I had put it but since now its been thru the coldest part of winter, I will just wait until it warms up before starting it. thanks again!

I checked the compression on 3 cylinders, the one on the water pump outside was 30psi, the one next to it was 90psi, and the third from water pump was 120psi. even after adding a shot of oil, the psi stayed the same. Am I to assume I need a new head gasket or could the rings be bad. I did run the motor, I think without water for a while before realizing it?
