Timing chain

First years of the new style Equinox broke some water pump chains and if you tried going long on the oil changes they'd tear up the plastic guides.

I have 3 of those little Ecotec 4 cylinders. Two with 150,000 miles and one with 90,000 miles. So far no issues. Good little engines. I change the oil between 4500 and 5000 miles. All 3 of them use about a quart between oil changes. I did read that they aren't very tolerant of dirty oil. If I went by the oil change monitor I could stretch the oil change interval to 8000 or 9000 miles. To me that is way to long between oil changes.

we see a lot of them at the dealership I work at , not an uncommon repair. The people that go 8-9K miles between oil changes seem to have higher failure rates but 2.4L and 3.6L both have timing chain issues.

That is why I like the FORD 300/6 cylinder motor. They have no timing chain. It is a gear to gear timing.

Tons of problems with timing chains, guides, tensioner etc. If its are making noise you better do something about it or you will have major engine damage, if not too late. Chains stretch, guides wear or brake then the chains slap around and start eating metal, then the metal shavings start migrating everywhere. Also its not too common but the camshaft reluctor can get loose on the front of the camshaft, why its pressed on and not keyed is beyond me.

A few things to note, the chains, guides, tensioner all need oil to work, starve it for oil and it will fail fast. Extended oil chainges are only good if using the right oil and checking it occasionally. I'm seeing a lot of newer vehicles coming in for their 7k+ oil changes and they are very low on oil, plus the general public wants the cheapest oil and/or conventional oil you can buy . This engine/design is known for excessive oil consumption issues anyway.

The market is full of cheap oil/filters, house brands... Some will never get it about extended oil changes but cheap oil/filters have to play into the deal...

The market has forced shops to buy cheap oil/filters to turn a buck on a service. I have got old and don't care to do a service anyways unless I have it on the lift for some gravy. I have started to stock OEM filters are top line filters and OEM equivalent name brand oil...

Take it are leave it I don't care... It does weed out the cheap arses...
