good morning all, this is my first time posting to the forum so be gentle!! LOL, I have recently purchased a 1947 oliver 70. now from what I am reading they used a continental engine in this model, however when looking at the brass serial plate on the engine it says cockshutt on it? does this sound normal? I understand that the two tractors were both built by oliver, just painted a different color, any insight would be greatly appreaciated

I'm certainly not one to sort out Oliver vs Cockshutt but maybe one answer is the engine was change out at some point. Anyway to date the engine vs the tractor and see if they match up by year?

Welcome to the group. I have 2 Earthmaster tractors with Continental N-62 engines. The plate on both of the engines reads thus; Made for Earthmaster by Continental Motors. These engines were made for many uses and all were set up especially for the application as specified by the equipment manufacturer. You can send the information from your plate to Mr. Gerry Moon at Monte,s Equipment in Chicago and he can translate the information and tell you when it was built, when shipped and who it was shipped to. He is very knowledgeable and also is a great supplier of Continental engine parts. Gene Davis Tennille, Ga.

Mr.Gerry Moon at Monte's Equipment in Chicago has many of the Continental Motor Company records and build sheets. He has been very helpful with matching the model and serial number of these engines. He will need the Model number, serial number and type number. He has been very helpful with determining if the engine in an Earthmaster is the correct block series for me.

The serial tag for the Oliver 70 was the brass tag on the engine. There was no other tag on the tractor. Hart Parr, then Oliver after they bought out Hart Parr, built the Cockshutt tractors until they started building their own in Brantford Ontario in 1946. Are you sure yours is a 47 or is it maybe a little earlier?
I honestly don't know if any Olivers were sold as Cockshutts after 1946,until 1962,when they stopped production in Brantford and started selling Olivers as Cockshutts again.

Any way you shuck it down,if it's a 70,it's,for all intent and purposes,an Oliver. I've got a 1939 70 and that one says Hart Parr on the tag.

I have a few of the "fleetline" series olivers (a 77 and a super 88) and have come to realize that they did a lot of changing between the streamline and fleetline series, in reading different forums the only thing that I can find for a serial plate is the one that is riveted to the left hand side of the motor, this is the plate that I am seeing that says cockshutt on it, if anyone may know if there is somewhere on the machine itself where I could find another plate or a nuber cast or stamped in I will certainly look

A few thoughts: engine change at some point. I believe 47 was about the last year of 70 so could parts orders been filled using what they had? Nice tractor though hope you enjoy it and stick around also jump down to the oliver forum.

If you look at the serial number and then the Oliver 70 serial numbers on this site, it will give you the year the engine was built. There were running changes of the rest of the tractor which will indicate when it was built. I have a Cockshutt 70 Standard 1941 which has been in the family for about 58 years. Just an excellent machine. We just did a paint and restore on it this year.
