Continental Red Seal 4 cylinder Diesels

Hello,

I have come across something I got very curious about. The Continental Red Seal 4 cylinder diesels. ZD-129, GD-157, GD-181, ED-201, HD-260, and JD-382.

These engines seems to be called Cushioned Power Diesels.

I have never heard about this before and wonder if anyone can shed some light to this. Were they good engines ? Did this "Cushion" thing work and cause less diesel noise and less stress on the engine parts ?

Among these, the ZD-129 diesel was as far as I have read developed for the Ferguson TO-20 and TO-30, but never used in them.

The 260 was used in the 44 massey and the 382 in the 55 series. From my experience they seemed to be tough old engine.

All had the Lanova energy cell fuel system like most engine builders had at the time. MH 55 early models did have some cranks break. I have a Continental TD-427 six cylinder turbocharged diesel from a military gen-set that needs to be put in something..

There was also the ED208, HD277 that both MHF tractor and Case Terratrac crawlers used too. Massey JD 382 in the 55 and 555 stayed under 1600 rpm, the Case 1010 crawler ran the engine at 2000, but they had the balancer on the block base inside the pan.

Long ago I found a few engine parts for ZD120.
I have never seen a engine, might have been used as
power unit for irrigation pump.

Dieseltech, sounds like the same engine used in some of the 2.5 ton military trucks when I was in the army. Think they used different letter ID for the engines in trucks though. Also had a 465 non turbo and turbo engine. 2.5 ton with 465 no turbo and 465 with turbo in 5 ton.

Yep, I think "tech" has it covered.

Pre-chamber or "energy cell" diesels can be lighter and have a less beefy "lower end" than "direct injection" diesels.

But that doesn't happen anymore due to high HP requirements and meeting emissions rules, apparently.

The 157 and 181 were used in Case hundred series tractors 1956-60 Rock Island tractors as well as ATC/Terratrac dozers which Case bought out.
