gas tank sealer

My Ford 2000 (4cyl) has a small leak in the gas tank under the mounting bracket, so I can't get to it. Has anybody here used the pour in sealer that is offered at Steiner and other places? Should I use the whole kit, or just the sealer? I have the tank out, but have not emptied it yet and taken a good look at the condition inside. Thanks in advance for the help, I've gotten a lot of good advice here in the past.

The sealer I used has broken ap from I suspect ethynol. Since you have the tank out maybe a machine shop can fix it

I have had success with the stuff NAPA sells. I did the tank on Super A about 3 years ago and it's still holding.

timny,

I had great success using the exterior putty to seal some pinholes and wear-through spots. Ethanol didn't touch it.

Depends on how big your hole is. I have used red kote to seal up the inside of a tank, you know if its rusty or something. Been running that tank for four years and still hasnt broke down, it did color the gas a redish tint for about six months but havent had any problems. It will seal very small holes, or pin holes but anything very large it wont do.

Got some stuff from either atwoods or tsc I think it was called tanks sealer, comes in a yellow tube like silicone. It will seal bigger holes but nothing huge. You smear this stuff on the out side of the tank. After I used this stuff I also used the red kote on the inside of tank as well just to make sure.

Good luck

A gas tank liner is more or less paint and you have to clean the inside of the tank and dry it first. I also use Red Kote. You pour the stuff in the gas tank but you have to tilt the gas tank in all different directions so the stuff covers completely. Then if there is any excess left you pour it out and allow the tank to dry.

Like Stephen said prep is everything just like paint. Even the best tank coating needs perfect adhesion conditions.
If it isn't done right the gasoline and (gasp) alcohol will get behind it and delaminate it. One pinhole is all it takes. Seems to me like specialty coatings like epoxy or tank coating will pop off fairly quickly if the surface isn't prepped properly.

I used the two part epoxy on a dump truck (gas) tank that had a wear hole in it and it held until the rest of the truck was ready for the junk yard.

The tank on my 41 had several pinholes that I sodered with an iron NO FLAME , then used red coat. Lasted 10 or more years then leaked again. This time I replaced tank. joe
