Tractor tire chains - 11.2x24 vs 12.4x24

The original rear tire size for my 1956 Deere 420U was 11x24 (might have been 11.2). When I replaced the tires years ago, only 12.4x24 was available.
I have an opportunity to buy 11.2x24 tire chains but will they fit 12.4x24? Or are they too small?

If I remember correctly, the 11X24 tire and the 12.4 are about the same size. The 11X24 was the old measuring system where the tread width was measured. The 12.4 designation measures the widest point of the sidewall. They are basically the same tire. The actual measurement of the tire will vary all over the place depending on the manufacturer in my experience.

The chains are far away and it is too much trouble to try fitting them.

Not much difference between an 11.2 and a 12.4.... and most tire chains are made to fit more than one size of tire. I'd bet they fit.

You can always splice a link or two in if you come up a little short.

When I bought Duo-Grip chains from tirechains.com about 6 years ago they were advertised as fitting both 11.2-38 and 12.4-38. I use them on 11.2-38 tires and they have about 12" of extra side chain which I bolt to the side chain in use.

The 11x24 and the 12.4x24 are the same tire. When the switch in sizing was being done they were marked this way 11/12.4 x 24. the 10 x 24 became the 10/11.2 x 24. And that 1" makes more difference than you think. The problem is not length of side chain as that is easy to add to, but the length of the cross chain. If adequet for the 11.2 it may be too short for the 12.4 to stay on the tread corectly. And there is a full inch or more between tires of same size marking from one brand to anouther. So if they fit one of the smaller tires corectly they might not work on the larger one marked same size. Measure the width of the cross chains laied out with a tape, then take that tape and lay over the tire you are wanting to put them on and see how far down the sidewalls that tape comes to, needs to be a third of the way down on both inside and outside. If he is buying them as sounds like it might be seller should be able to measure for him.
