Soybean seed prices

Pretty much on par with last year. 50 to 65 dollars per unit or more depending on if RR and treated and heavily trait-ed. I here stories of lower prices but have no firm proof. I don't know about the foundation stock for these cheaper products. Anyways, it was nice when you got 50 lb units when the seed ran smallish 3500 seeds per pound or more. The companies now do like corn where the unit is the seed count per bag.
 
The seed count rather than a weight per bag can actually help rather than hurt. You know exactly what you are putting on, for one. Also, and even more importantly, is the fact that many varieties "throw" large seed and are often some of the better varieties. In years past these varieties would have been kicked out due to a low seed count per 50 lb. bag, making them a low demand product in the old market. Mike
 
I just pre-paid for 750 acres. It was just under $40,000. I guess that works out to 52 or $53 a unit bag. This is treated liberty link. Last year I bought half treated and didn't end up using it when I needed to but it grew better.
 
The number of seeds per pound were always stated on the products I purchased. Couple that with using radial meters I always had a good handle on what I was dropping. True in that some good yielder's threw large seed but a lot of the "workhorse" varieties that adapted well to my conditions ranged 3000 to 3800 seeds per pound. It just so happened the best for me based on what the weigh wagon said were more than often small seeds but many seeds produced per plant. I would never say that there were not large sized soybean seeds that yielded well as area test plots would show a mix of both large and small seed varieties that performed well.
 
If you could do simple math then on the 50# bags you still knew how many seeds were in that bag and you still could figure the cost per acre.
