New Project

A friend of mine fixed up an electrolysis tank. It worked so well that I decided to do the same. My first project is a rusty old cast iron skillet. I checked this morning and it seems to be working. I can see where this could really be helpful on cleaning up tractor and implement parts. Anyone else tried it?

I set on up some time ago and used a fiberglass horse tank, it worked great for me, most hoods and fenders would fit and wheels if you rotated them. I used an old disc as the sacrificial metal and used a bar with cables and clamps welded on to attach to my work. Hooked battery charger to disc (pos) and neg to bar with cables.

I have used a 4 foot kids wading pool could put some biger things in it. Was able to reuse several times. joe

A few years ago somebody on here had pictures of a tank he built big enough to put a trailer in.

A pallet tank works good for this, I have never used one but a friend of mine made one this way and it worked good, he could move it around easy with a fork lift,, my thoughts on one is they work great but take up too much room in the shop...If I was going to do a lot of restoration work I would build one..

I read removing rust using the electrolysis method takes something out of the metal, but works. Something not subjected to stress like your frying pan shouldn't be a problem. I have always been looking for a way to remove rust. I read using 1 part molasses to 9 parts water. works great. I have been using it to remove rust on my 52 Plymouth coupe parts. Now if you are in a hurry forget the molasses. This fender took about two weeks. It will only remove rust, no paint, or greasy parts. The stuff gets a little stinky also. but it works. Here is a fender I just removed and rinsed off. The top coat needs to be applied immediately, because it being bare metal will flash rust. Works for me. Stan

You would never think a good old fashion battery charger could do something like that! Neighbor had a kiddy pool set up. Trouble was he couldn't wait a week to clean it up. So he wire wheeled it. Twit. Here is a photo of what a charger can do. Had it hooked up under a tarp and there was a little moisture in there. These are heavy duty and it only took a couple of weeks. And this was on trickle charge! Oh yes it is mind boggling how fast that flash rust can happen on a humid day. KA- Zap!

I'm thinking I remember reading that some of the newer battery chargers will not work for electrolysis unless there is a battery in the loop. Don't remember why. So? Not so?

They need to detect a voltage. You need one of the real old goodies. Go pick one up at a flea market or yard sale. ALSO just thinking... you can use the transformer "power pack" for a toy train set. It needs to be for a DC toy. HO toy train that only has two rails not three.

In early 2000 I did several parts. The biggest were the rear tractor rims. It did a good job. The most unique was the fuel tank. I put the electrodes inside and insulated them at the fill cap. it clean up very good inside.
