battery question

On my Oliver 88 diesel it has two 6 volt batteries are these in a series I'm assuming? And when I need to charge it should I charge them individually or desperate I have charged them separate but was curious thus is my first tractor like this and it has the generator

I would disconnect them and charge each one then use a hy to see if they are both good and read 1250 check each cell to make sure they are good as charging them in series one will probably get more charge than the other could end up frying one batt by over charge.

Depending on the starter solenoid:

I charge the 4020 by hooking the charger to the frame and the battery lug on the starter. This will only work if the cable to the starter is direct from the batteries. The 4020 uses a different wire to kick the starter in - the amps to start it don't go through a solenoid. I just hook my smart charger there and walk away.

Sorry notjustfair but amps do go through solenoid on a JD 4020. Are you referring to a starter relay?

ell, Nick, there you have it. The definitive answer is yes & no, according to the posters.

I would charge them together on 12V unless it appeared that they were not taking/ holding a charge. Then separating could help me to troubleshoot the problem, but only if I didn't have the means to otherwise test.
