I have used them in both a 5.4 and a V10 ford. I dont remember how many miles we put on the 5.4 but it was a lot and its still going. The V10 has over 100,000 miles on the insert with about 274,000 on the motor and it is still used daily. I am a big fan of doing things right the first time. I dont think you can go wrong with timesert if it is installed properly.

I have the timesert kit for the Cadillac Northstar engines. I've done head gaskets on a couple of them. No issues. Seems to be a well made setup.

They are better in all ways. The only exception is if the area around the threads is narrow such that there is insufficient material around the insert. A helicoil requires less side clearance. The solid inserts also use standard taps for creating the external threads. Jim

I was using them at my first job as a VW Porsche tech in 1976. I have installed hundreds of them and still think they are the best. There are somemother designs that work well too, but I will only use a coil type thread insert as a last resort.
