Harbor Freight Hours

I just got this email from HF. What do you think? Employee concern or cost cutting or ?

Dear Customers,
At Harbor Freight Tools, one of our guiding values is "Doing the Right Thing" for our customers, our communities and our employees.
As we've continued to explore ways to make Harbor Freight an even better place to work, one of the things we heard from many of our
store managers was that staying open until 9:00 PM meant that lots of our employees missed the chance to have family time in the
evenings and often missed seeing their kids before bedtime.

The good news is that there was something we could do about that.
So starting February 1st, all of our stores that currently close at 9:00 PM will close an hour earlier...at 8:00 PM.

For your local store's new hours, go to HarborFreight.com.

I know this change means that some of you will have to shop with us earlier
in the day and I apologize for any inconvenience that may cause.

On behalf of all our Harbor Freight employees who now have a little more balance in their lives, I want to thank you for
coming in a little earlier and helping us make Harbor Freight a great place to work.

Cost cutting. They were not selling enough between 8 and 9 PM to make it worth staying open.

They are just trying to put a happy face on the change by saying it's all about letting their employees go home earlier.

But if they had a bunch of customers that shopped that late, I guarantee they would stay open.

I think some of both. It probably wasn't cost effective, and it may help in employee retention. Remember, it's hard to get employees in some areas.

Agreed. Very few organizations tritely care about their employees. Realistically, if they close at 9 that means they might be out by 9:30, but probably closer to 10 by the time you do registers, clean up, prep for next day etc. So now instead of getting off at 10, they get off at 9. Probably not going to change the amount of family time they have to spend by much.

BS because they have only spent 30 hours MAX a week at work because of these new crazy laws. They hardly have any full timers left and all new hires are part time. So the workers have plenty of time to spend with the family just no money.

My local menards now stays open till 10:30. Open at 5:30, sometimes employees have to be there an hour before there shift and sometimes stay after.

I just got the email.

I had to smile.

Of course it is cost cutting, it doesn't bother me.

I wish they would build one closer, I gotta drive 90-110 miles to get to one.

Probably good for my bank account they aren't closer......

I had a few hours to kill today while having some work done on my car so I walked a block to Harbor Freight. After more than an hour in the store I left [i:9bbd452822]empty handed[/i:9bbd452822]. Turns out I already have all the cheap crap I need.

I'd have to guess the reality of external_linkcare too.

The 30 hour limit.

People are having their hours/paychecks cut by 10 hours a week, and forced to pay a fine for not buying the healthcare they can't afford because their hours were cut.

Land of the free.

Was in the 1 in Des Moines a few nights ago, looked profitable to me at 8.30 they had at least a dozen people buying stuff. that was on a Tuesday night but I understand about closing early. I know the attitude of my fellow employees improved greatly when the boss decided to be closed on Mondays with no cut in wages. We were working 10-12 hour days some 14 hours 5 days a week and 5-7 hrs on Sat. We close when the last cust is out the drive way.

It won't affect me at all.
I live less than a mile from one and never
go in the place.
Well, I did a couple of times.
It's right next door to Dong's asian food
store where I buy my jasmine rice, hoisin
and soy sauce. Dong's smells like stinky
fish. But it's better than HF which smells
like hot rubber.
Buy good tools. Do good work.

external_link's other plan of changing the overtime rules does nothing to help us poor working stiffs as the employers are not going to pay it so now your hours are cut ! My wife got hit with this pay cut plan. She works in home health care and they were exempt but now have to pay overtime for over 40 hours. So now she will NEVER get extra hours in.

"Buy good tools. Do good work."

Totally agree. Great place to buy other stuff though.
Like sand blast media and disposable HVLP paint gun cups.
The $10 paint guns actually work quite well too.
Don't bother to try to get parts for those guns though.
Not available. Just buy another $10 paint gun or use
parts from one of your old ones.
