I am nearly 68 years old and I got my first broken bone yesterday. Had stepped up on the back bumper of my pickup to put the suction line for our pump into a 55 gal. drum to pump some oil into our waste oil furnace tank. My nephew went back inside to start the pump. When I saw the oil level start down I stepped off the bumper. As my left foot got to the ground it slipped in the snow and I went down across a railroad tie that we use for wheel stops next to the building. Had to lay there and yell until nephew heard me and come back and help me up. Happened about 2:30 endured the pain until after supper. Got to the emergency a few minutes before 6 pm. Got x-ray and confirmed 1 broken rib. Dr. ordered CAT scan to check for damage to spleen, that was negative. Had all that done and started back home by 10 pm. On pain meds for a few days hope to be able to get back on a tractor in a few weeks. Only good part was a good looking young female Dr. treated me in the ER.

I've had broken ribs several times. Takes about 3 weeks to heal. I wore a tight wide band around my chest for a week for support. Other than that, there's nothing you can do but take it easy.

I had to sleep sitting up in the recliner for about a month; couldn't stand the pain of laying in bed.

Been the done that a couple times. ouch ! A big tip--If you have to cough or sneeze, quickly use your arms to 'hug' yourself tightly...!

Been there, done that several times--at least five. Lying in bed and getting out of bed is difficult and painful. First time, 1960's, three ribs, I went to a doctor. He gave me a rib belt and that's about it. Rest of the times I treated myself. Nowadays they don't want you to use a rib belt. In fact, it's hard to find one. They're more concerned with preventing pneumonia brought on by restricted breathing. Last time was 4 years ago, again three ribs, 76 years old--wife and daughter really raised heck with me for refusing to go to the emergency room! I knew from experience there was nothing they could do but generate a large bill.

One rib is a piece of cake. 7 On the same side, 3 front and 4 in back, hurt like CRAZY. No matter what you do,involves your ribs. Word of caution, use a stool softener!!

BTDT, several times. Had to sleep in a recliner for a couple of weeks 'cause it hurt too much to lay down in bed.

Our pastor's wife confided in me once that when she was in high school she had a boyfriend who had a motorcycle.

She was a PK (preacher's kid), and her parents forbid her from riding on the motorcycle. So, being a teenager, that was even more of an incentive to ride with her boyfriend. The inevitable happened and they dumped the motorcycle. She hit a tree and said her chest hurt something horrible. But-the consequences of having been on the motorcycle would have been more painful than the injury, so she gutted it out and didn't tell her parents. After several weeks, the pain went away.

Several years later, she had a chest x-ray for some reason or other and the doctor asked, "Man, when did you break all of those ribs"? She'd broken eight.

I broke 3 ribs at sternum first of September stepping off back of swather after changing alternator, step stool tipped. All are correct about pain when doing anything. Breathe deep, try not to cough, sneeze, or even pass gas, amazing what all is connected to your chest muscles. spent about 3 weeks in recliner. kind of nice having mama wait on me tho.

3 weeks sure fast. Had one cracked last September in truck wreck. Was told 6-8 weeks for it to heal. and was still sore after 5 weeks.

I got off lucky compared to all of you. Dumped a motorcycle a few years back. Broke one of the short ribs on the left side. Didn't realize it was broke for several days. Was feeling the sore spot with my fingers and could feel the break in the rib. Lotsa road rash, too. Took one day off from work, felt guilty about goofing off, and went back at it. If I had known I was going to get laid off 6 weeks later, I would have stayed home. (smile)

Isn't it great that at our age a pretty young thing can still make our day when all else has seemed to go wrong? The mind is a wonderful thing.

I stopped into the mobile phone store a couple of days ago because I had found a lost phone. They would take care of it no problem. Delt with them before and they are nice folks. Now as I was talking to them this VERY pretty young thing was talking on her phone with her mother about something. I had a really hard time breathing and my ears would shut off and on now and them. BOY was she cute and pretty! AND I do mean pretty.

Broke femur as child, 3 ribs at work in Wal-Mart 15 years ago, and ankle last summer. (1 plate and 10 or 12 screws). Still adjusting to cold weather this winter.
