hunkerin' down

Here is central Va its been unusually warm until this week. Now the weather prognosticators are using terms like "blizzard-like", "heavy snow", and "feet of snow". Time to lay in extra firewood and get the Dodge pointed down hill. May even plug it in.

I'm not too far up the valley from you. I think we're in the zone. I remember getting up to 4 feet in our area in January 1996. Could get a couple feet from this one so they say. Got the generator ready, plenty of fuel, extra milk and toilet paper.

I was in the Air Force and arrived at
McGuire AFB,NJ for temporary duty the
evening before the storm hit. That was
some blizzard. I grew up in Eastern KS
and was stationed in Iceland at the
time. That was the first time in my life
that I had experienced that much snow
all at one time. Now I live in the Texas
Panhandle and just went through one
here. I am ready for spring. Hunker down guys it could get ugly.

Yes, we are over one and a half minutes of gained daylite a day. Whoo hoo The sunset time has been moving back for a couple of weeks now at a minute a day. And now sunrise should pull back a little less than a minute a day for another week or so. Now if the earth didn't wobble this wouldn't happen. It is fun to watch the skies. Oh by the way. At sunrise there is a pretty good show that happens like every decade. Planet alignment at the end of the week and for several weeks. Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, Mars, and Saturn They should all be spread out in a row form horizon to a little over your head. Should repeat this fall. There is also supposed to be a transient of Mercury coming up. May 9th, 2016 and we will be SMACK in the middle of it a little before noon. It will probably rain. I saw and videoed the one with venus like seven years ago but the second one two summers ago it was cloudy.

The models so far have been looking a LOT like the Jan 96 blizzard. Could be interesting. Wishing we'd get a good amount of snow in IL.

Filled shed at wood boiler today and filled tractor with fuel. Tomorrow blade goes on the tractor. Grapple comes off loader and bucket goes on.

Latest from wset Lynchburg says a min. of 6 inches. Max 16 to 24 inches. All depending where it comes in from. To our south and east more snow. North we'll get less. Suppose to start Friday morning and end mid day Sat.

Hang in there Steve and be safe.

Just got back from the local conv. store. Wawa here in south Jersey. ALL of the bread is gone already! Not too much milk left in the cooler case.

Where I live in CO it has been unusually cold and wet with lots of snow. First one of the year is still on the ground. that never happens here. It has been weeks that we have not got above freezing to melt it off. I hate winter. I'm a sunny and 70's guy. If you guys out ease are getting ready to get what we have had be ready. It moves slow and stays cold.

Ah heck if ya don't want it just send it up this way . Won't bother me one tiny little bit I'll just have to go buy some gas for the snow blower , not a big deal. Got milk bread freezer half full, got coffee , got lots of whisky , beers a little short but thats ok.Got one ton 4x4 Goat , got 4x4 Durango and it won't be the first big snow that i have seen or been in and probably not the last,

That was on the evening news here. The stores milk and bread are sold out. I don't understand it. I have never been snowed in more than 6-10 hours. Been without power for over 2 weeks but not snowed in.

Plus, I have cases of evaporated milk and a couple of boxes of powdered milk. Flour, yeast, sugar, etc., to make bread if needed.

I like a good snow at least once a winter. My main concern is my Mom. She just turned 90 and has had health problems for the last 10 years. I have to get her to the emergency room in Lynchburg often. It's a 40 mile trip. I'll try and keep the highway from my house to the primary road open just in case I have to get her out to the hospital.

Other than that we are prepared. Plenty of food, water, good heat source and have generators in case of power loss.

One forcaster just said we would have some wind. So we might have drifting. Now that's no fun at all. LOL

As I stated in the thread regarding the UP of Michigan, I have to laugh at folks here in Virginia that fear a winter snowstorm as if it was some kind of natural disaster. One winter in Munising, MI we had 450" of snow. Yoopers have always embraced winter and snow and not only learned to cope, but actually ENJOY extreme snowfall. Here in Mecklenburg County I live 20 miles from shopping, a long driveway to a little travelled secondary road. But the state road crews have an excellent plan for snow removal and I have a 4X4 truck if needed to get to town. BRING IT ON!

We don't have fear of snow. Just try and be prepared. In my area VDOT doesn't touch a secondary road till it stops snowing. That's fine for a 6-8 in. snow. Foot or more and drifting have been blocked in for days. 1962 our roads were blocked for 7 days. Had drifts 10 and 12 ft. in places. VDOT had to contract crawlers to open the road on day 8. They took out fences and mail boxes because they couldn't see them. VDOT had nothing that would move snow like that back then.

Just don't like hearing about folks with health problems blocked in and can't get help if needed fast.

Forcast this morning says snow changing to sleet and back to snow. Most of the time our snows are wet and heavy anyway. add ice or sleet and things come down to the ground fast.

That's what a good old nor'easter does for us.

i'd say that you've pretty much covered all the bases! :)

Quite alright, we don't mind. When we're sitting on the beach down here in May we'll think of you up there still freezing you're @$$ off.

Yeah, years ago we had an open winter. Hardly any snow at all ..............................until the first weekend in march..................................48 inches in two days. (chuckle) Did more snowmobile repair work in the next two weeks than I had done all winter.
