Cold Weather

Not wanting to steal JD's thread but how cold does it have to get when you say screw it, I do not have to go out and I am in for the day? It is 5 here now and I am wondering if I am getting to be a sissy.

I dunno, shoveled out a stuck vehicle late last night for a friend @ -20?F and lived to tell about it! -4? here now and I'm headed outside again.

-13 now was -18 last night. I am watching the puffs of condensation from a Rheem 96% efficient furnace go by the window. It is sunny, but not for bathing in it. Jim in central MN

Don't mind the cold now that I'm retired. Used to hate it when I had to wear a suit and waited for a bus on the corner when it was cold out. Now I just go out when I'm well dressed when I want.

I have had livestock my entire adult life and most of my childhood. So I never have been able to NOT go out just because of the cold. The real fun is when your real sick. I have be so sick that chores would take most of the morning with me hanging over the manure spreader puking my guts up.

The things I think about now, that I never thought about when I was younger, such as being alone and outside on a cold winters day. Slip, fall, whatever, and nobody around to help you before you freeze. Best to stay inside if you don't have to be outside when it is that cold....

When there's cattle to feed, bed and water, there's no saying to heck with it. You have to do it,no matter what. As far as anything else, there's no certain temperature. If I'm uncomfortable and it's something that doesn't need to be done,it's just a matter of knowing I don't want to be there. I don't answer to anybody,so I don't have to explain myself.

Had a good friend that when he had dairy cows went nineteen years without missing a milking. I often remind my daughters of him when they tell me how hard they are working.

I am 57 raised livestock for 35 years of my first 40 and have paid my dues. I have paid plenty of money for heated house, shop, vehicles, and cab tractors so it has to be someone in a bind for me to leave those heated areas. In my youth it was a challenge to outlast winter now my body hurts from it.

You can't say that when you got livestock to care for. I feel bad enough for them having to be out there 24-7 when its cold. I sure can't balk when it comes to caring for them because of the cold.
Other outside work I will say to heck with it if I can't do it in comfort. I did so today and its only down to 16 right now although being Sunday I don't always work anyway in the winter.

I sure notice when it is below 10. Above 10F and it is just a nice winter day.

Minus 5F is where I need to plan out what I'm doing, what is the wind speed so I don't loose an ear or finger to windchill, etc.

Minus 15F and I need to do what is needed and get back to some place warmer. Many short trips out to do chores, etc.

Its minus 6 now, just off our high of minus 5 today. Better get to another round of chores before it drops more. Check the waterer again. Should be ok it was in the sun over the day. The Cobett sure is nice.

Used to work outside when I was young, as cold as -30f, it depends what you are doing. I worked construction doing carpenter work, and worked in the logging industry, if it's not windy and you can keep up a steady pace you can stay warm. I remember one day we decided it was too cold to go to work but when it warmed up to -30 we went snowmobiling!

If it gets down to 40 or lower I don't go outside. After 30 years of living in the desert, I don't like the cold.

Cold temps don't bother me. Wind and humidity DO!!!!!! The other day it was around 35 windy and humid. I didn't get much done outside. Today it was 10 and a stiff breeze but little humidity. Didn't feel to bad out.

I have an old Air force parka, I think the fur on the hood is wolf fur, as it does not frost up. I used to wear it when I would walk out to my fish house in below zero weather. With it zipped all the way up I was a bit claustrophobic, just looking out through the snorkel! Now I am in Arizona at the pool!

Put my Carhartts on this morning and went out and cut wood by myself for about 5 hours. The temp wasn't too bad, 7?F, but the 15-20 mph wind was pretty brisk. Not a big deal, if it's not snowing, my job is working cutting trees in winter.
